Norwich City’s newest signing Gary O’Neil has warned the Canaries they must strive to hit the ground running in Sunday’s Championship opener at Wolves.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

O’Neil will be sat in the stands at Molineux serving a one-game ban for his red card in QPR’s successful Wembley Championship play-off final victory over Derby in May.

The 31-year-old signed a two-year deal with the Canaries earlier this week after his Rangers’ release and his recent experience of the second tier leaves him well-placed to suggest what it will take for Neil Adams’ squad to emulate the Londoners and bounce back at the first attempt.

“It’s a tough league, it’s a long season. It’s key we get off to a good start,” he said. “Obviously I miss the first one at Wolves with a suspension but I will be there and I will watch the lads and its key there is no hangover. You have to hit the ground running. We were lucky enough last year to do that at QPR and then we stumbled a touch later but the start will be key.

“Norwich is keen to get back to the Premier League, they get fantastic support and everyone I have spoken to have said what a great club it is to play for and a great area to live in. I’m looking forward to a really good year.”

O’Neil was also touted with a summer switch to City’s Championship rivals Reading before agreeing to a Carrow Road move.

“I’m really pleased to be here and to get it all done. I had the medical and signed on Monday evening and I managed to train with the lads on Tuesday and I am just ready to get going now,” he told the club’s official site. “I haven’t probably played as many games as the rest of the lads (this summer).

“I played two lots of 45 minutes at QPR so I am lacking in game time but I feel good and if I can keep training and then get the odd game in before I start to be involved with the first team.

“The training ground is a good set-up and the squad has plenty of good players so I have been impressed. The gaffer seems enthusiastic and the coaching staff are nice to work with.

“They are well-organised but you are never really sure how it is going to go until you cross that white line at Wolves. I’m sure we’ll be up there with the best of them.”

  • Looks like we have a player who will do the job he has been brought in to do and to go about it in a down to earth manner. Seems no egos there and his experience with QPR should benefit us. The downside of being outside the PL is now come home to roost as like our Canadian contributors i.e. lack of Championship coverage. Last season we had one game a week with some highlights of other games but the programme was only on Saturday but hopefully we get something for Sunday. You can tell your season is not going well when you scan through the channels to find PL matches and the first football channel is showing Ipswich playing ..... the rest of the season went downhill! • Andy tomlinson-smith, despite allegations to the contrary, generally speaking opposing supporters are politely received on these boards. We`ve had good dialogue with Brum and AV people. But once one becomes a `wind-up merchant`, all the goodwill evaporates faster than a forward`s confidence under Chris Hughton. Btw; I have a pal who is a lifetime Millwall supporter, and he`s never had anything good to say about Kenny Jackett. But hasn`t Kenny done well? Good luck to him. Just don`t do it at our expense (please). Just off for a pint of Banks`s Bitter. Btw:- About 48 years ago I owned a DMW motorbike. Dawson`s Motors Wolverhampton. Honest. Collectors` item now. DMW Dolomite. Villiers 2-stroke 2T twin ;-)

  • I've avoided all the Wolves fans horror stories. Heard many but avoided them all. On all the away days i've had, the only trouble i've had is consistently WBA fans, minor issues with Forest fans living in the past & of course Ipswich fans, who keeps finding new ways to make me miss the start of the match at Portman Road!

  • Andy - Wolves fans didn't used to be friendly outside the ground. I remember a fight started by them in some horrible underpass quite close to the ground. Mind you I think that was in 1972.

  • Same victor. Not been to Colney to watch training or the youth lads since before Roeder's horrid era and he stopped it all then anyway. I believe its open certain days (midweek usually) but could all have changed now we are playing midweek more often. I know you can still go watch the youth lads as well. Keep meaning to pop up again sometime.

  • Can anybody tell me whether supporters are allowed through the gates at Colney to watch training. Through ill health I have been unable to go in recent years but I know the club banned supporters for a while as they thought unwanted scouts from other clubs were watching and gleaning our secrets. Given the opportunity I would like to visit the training ground again. Many a pleasant morning spent there and of cause Trowse in the good old days.

  • Thanks chap. Be warned you may get a bit of stick from some here, simply for being a Wolves fan. I've no real issue with Wolves to be fair (just Kevin Muscat!!!). Never had any issue away at Wolves...WBA on other hand....no end of stick, fights, trouble the lot! No idea why from such a boring club like them! Stew, just noticed my last sentence as well. Apologies! Dont want to slip into that trap!

  • Hi guys Wolves fan here. here is hoping for a great opening game. friendly fans outside the ground but much different inside when molinuex roars there is no ground like it. hope you enjoy your day but tbh I think it will end in a draw. mind you if Sako is fit we could just nick it. but aside from that have a safe trip to and back home.

  • …..Matt!...your final sentence reminded me of someone we have just got rid of!... Bust a gut in the centre, cover a wide variety of areas, and give 100%! ..He was thought well of by many...not me!...I just O'Neil gels with the rest of the team!.....

  • Brew! I am very fond of stew! please don't put the oar in. This time of the year, I give pheasant plucking a rest, an concentrate on more earthly things. My tomatoes have been lined up in the greenhouse in Chevron formation and are producing fine results. But it's raining today so have sat myself at the computer. I see that some one has decided to become a Parsnip ( not a good choice of name)! There will only be one Pa Snipps though! Ma tells me that she would like to meet that Stew Pydsodd and would give him a right mouthful for any assertions he may or may not have made! Please tell her that you are not the Stew Pydsodd in question!

  • Young and hungry signing. Oh wait, not young. But still seems hungry. Guess we'd better feed him (once he's available to play). Would love a good start next Sunday against Wolves. But no one should get too despondent if we don't win. I seem to remember we lost our opening fixture of our last promotion season 3-2 to Watford. I think it's more important for NA (lest we forget that he's still winless in a competitive first team fixture as boss). Maybe that's why we played the pub sides in Italy...to give him some confidence...anyway, I think we will win - and I think the standard Brewer bet (unless I'm misremembering) of 2-1 to City will come good next Sunday. Just imagine City scoring more than one in a game. (Easier to imagine than remember I think).

In my true pessimist style ill be putting a draw or a wolves win down on my bookies form. Hope to be wrong of course. OTBC! Cant wait now!

  • Think this is a sound piece of business - free transfer and probably not silly wages and a whiff of insurance about it if we get raided before the end of the month. Clearly knows how to play in the Championship. Probably not long-term but getting out of this division is the aim.
