Futures of Norwich City’s fringe men is not Neil Adams’ priority

Norwich City boss Neil Adams understands the frustrations of his fringe men but equipping the Canaries’ for a Championship promotion push is the only priority.

Seb Bassong, Luciano Becchio and Mark Bunn were all notable absentees from the 24-man squad who travelled to Italy for what has now become a two-game tour, which began with a 13-0 win over part-timers SC Vallee d’Aoste.

Bunn featured at Braintree in the 6-1 friendly victory prior to his team mates departing for the Canaries’ training base in Chatillon Saint Vincent, whilst Becchio was on duty at Dereham. Adams realises his decision to leave the trio behind fuels the growing belief they are poised for summer exits – but only if it is right for all parties.

“Everyone knows the squad that is out here and we have players pushing for first team places more than others. As and when the (transfer) window closes everyone will know where we stand,” he said. “I don’t really want to talk about individual players because that can attract interest from other clubs and we don’t want to give others a competitive advantage or give things away when you are dealing with transfers.

“It is fairly clear there will be players here who will be attractive to other clubs. I appreciate supporters and the media want to know these things but we don’t want to end up in a situation where we give the game away. That applies to all the lads, not just the ones here or at home.”

Adams revealed Bunn’s desire for regular football could be the deciding factor in his future, with John Ruddy the undisputed first choice.

“Mark’s situation is he is in the last year of his contract here and he wants to play first team football and rightly so. I can understand that,” said Adams.

“I thought it was a good opportunity to bring Remi Matthews out along with Declan (Rudd) and have them competing for the number one shirt. Mark is in that mix as well but it is better for him to play and train with the 21s rather than come out here and play 45 minutes perhaps in nine days. It is in the best interests of the player and I feel we are well covered in that department.”

  • Despite all the talk of bonding in Italy you are left with the impression our final squad come the closing of the window could look very different. On the subject of goalkeepers one rumour a few weeks back was Butland on loan from Stoke following Ruddy's departure.

  • Yes, it's a tough time of the season, trying to pre-empt who might go. If we sell Ruddy we'll struggle to sign someone any better than Bunn, at this late stage. So if we sell Bunn we must make sure Ruddy stays. Agree on Becchio too. He won't want to be 5th choice, as he is now, but if we lose Hooper and RVW we would be down to two established strikers, so would need to go out and buy again. Or loan Patrick Bamford.

  • It's always a juggling act this time of the season. Clubs do not want to lose players with out a replacement in place or identified and available. Bassong in particular could play a key role but looks like he is seriously out of favour. Would love to know the real details what was said happened.

  • Colin, I see what you're saying and perhaps this applies to Becchio and Bassong more. Regarding Bunn though, if we manage to fend off interest for Ruddy then yes, he is surplus to requirements but if Ruddy leaves, we need his experience to call upon. In some ways, if big money comes in for RvW and Hooper, we'll need Becchio still

  • I love the 'I'm not going to talk about individual players and give the game away' stance becoming, 'Mark Bunn wants first team football and is third choice here'. Enter your low bids now please!

  • A no win situation here for NA .......... damned if you do damned if you dont. Here's hoping teams come in for the 3 B's sooner rather than later and let the squad settle .......... OTBC
