Former Norwich City winger Robert Eagle set to join Lowestoft Town

Former Norwich City winger Robert Eagle looks set to join Lowestoft Town in a permanent deal after impressing in the Blues’ 2-0 win over Kirkley & Pakefield in the Suffolk Premier Cup on Tuesday night.

Lowestoft director of football Craig Fleming has been keeping tabs on the 24-year-old and, after he was released by Grimsby Town, has offered the youngster the chance to resurrect his career.

Eagle scored within two minutes of his trial game against the Royals and Fleming revealed he is keen to hold further talks with his former Canaries team-mate to see if he wants to join the Trawlerboys’ promotion push in the Ryman League Premier.

“I will sit down and have a chat with him over the next few days to see what he’s thinking and hopefully we can come around to some kind of deal where both sides are happy,” said Fleming, who is keen to maintain the level of competition for places within the Blues squad.

“He ticks all the boxes. We are trying to get young, local lads from around the area that want to play.

“He started well and there were little flashes (against Kirkley). He probably needs a few more games but overall I’m quite impressed by him.”

Eagle made his debut for Norwich in a Carling Cup victory over Rotherham in 2006 and was highly thought of by former Canaries boss Glenn Roeder, who offered him a one-year contract in 2008.

However, a lack of first team football saw him depart for Inverness Caledonian Thistle, having made just 12 appearances for City, only three of which were starts.

He made 25 appeareance in Scotland, scoring four goals, before moving on to Grimsby in 2010.

The left-sided midfielder was told he was surplus to requirements by the Mariners at the start of the year following a loan spell at Alfreton Town and Fleming is very keen to add to the former Canaries contingent currently plying their trade at Lowestoft.

“It has all happened quite quickly – I’ve got a list of lads at home from my Norwich days and Eagle is obviously on that list,” he added.

“We’ve been pretty much in constant contact for a while now, his situation has now changed and he is looking for a club.

“I think he showed (against Kirkley) that he’s got ability – it’s always difficult in games like that to come in from the cold.

“He has never trained with the lads although he knows a lot of them from his Norwich days.

“But we will wait and see if we can get something done.”
