Former Norwich City midfielder Darel Russell is having a trial in Canada, according to reports.
The 32-year-old left cash-strapped League One side Portsmouth last month, a day before his contract was due to expire and is now having a trial with Toronto FC, who play their football in the MLS.
Toronto’s first team coach is another former Norwich City midfielder, Jim Brennan, although their paths never crossed at Carrow Road.
Russell came through the ranks at Norwich, making his debut in 1997 before leaving for Stoke City six years later. He returned to Carrow Road in 2007, when Peter Grant was manager, but left in 2010, having helped City to promotion from League One.
Russell had spells at Preston North End and Charlton Athletic before leaving for Fratton Park last September.
Chris Hughton insists he will spend his summer transfer windfall wisely after Jonny Howson’s multi-million pound goal boost to Norwich’s close season coffers.

Hi, canary_canuck. "Rusty" had a great promotion season with Norwich in L1. A rock throughout the season. Remember watching him when we beat Huddersfield 3-0 and Leeds 1-0 and thinking that the manager is seeing the perfect holding midfield performance. Darel seems to have made quite a few poor career choices - maybe "grass is greener" syndrome? But he had Prem potential. Shame. Wish him all the very best in Toronto.

Welcome to Toronto Darel. I hope you get on the squad as I was always impressed by your play at Carrow Road. TFC are a well supported team despite an abysmal record which I ascribe to poor ownership. However, there are some signs the team is heading in the right direction and Toronto is a terrific city in which to live. Apart from Jim Brennan Carl Robinson also played for TFC.
