FA Youth Cup holders Norwich City will travel to either Crawley Town or Watford in the fourth round of this season’s competition after hammering Preston’s Under-18s 6-1 in midweek at Deepdale.
Neil Adams’ squad face another road trip after eventually overcoming the Lilwyhites following extra-time on Wednesday. Crawley and Watford’s third round tie is scheduled to take place on December 19 with fourth round ties provisionally set to be played on January 25 2014. Adams admits he is relishing the prospect of another FA Youth Cup run but warned his latest crop they need to raise their game after being taken to extra-time at Preston before rifling four goals in eight minutes at Deepdale.
“It is a big challenge for me personally as a coach and of course after winning it you do allow yourself a bit of satisfaction that you got it right but really without the players you can’t do it,” he said. “When you have that you do have a winning combination. I think one of my strengths is tactical awareness. I like to play an attacking game and work out a way to beat the opposition and give them problems. I think that is what management and coaching is all about and we weren’t good enough for the 90 minutes but extra-time was nearer to the standards that we demand as a Category One Premier League club.
“Obviously the result in the end was very comfortable, but we made them aware it wasn’t good enough.”
Adams was confident his charges would prevail after the Lilywhites had made life difficult in normal time.
“I just fancied if we settled down and got them to pass it in the manner we can then we could get a better grip on the game,” he told the club’s official site. “That is how it proved but it was a good lesson if nothing else. We have to start games like we did extra-time. Credit to Preston they should be proud of themselves but ultimately our quality shone through in the end.”
