Southampton have been charged by the Football Association with failing to control their players following the award of a late penalty to Norwich City in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League match at Carrow Road.
After consulting with his assistant, referee Mark Clattenburg ruled that Luke Shaw had pushed Grant Holt just inside the penalty area.
Keeper Artur Boruc kept out the spot-kick to ensure the game finished goalless but Southampton players continued to protest after the final whistle, and were joined on the pitch by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
The club has until 4pm on Friday to respond to the charge.
Earlier the FA confirmed that no action will be taken against Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand for his clash with Chelsea striker Fernando Torres in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Ferdinand appeared to barge the Spain international to the ground before helping him to his feet in an off-the-ball collision which went unseen by referee Howard Webb.
However, a spokesman for the FA said Ferdinand would not face retrospective action.
The Canaries are reportedly closing in on the signing of Blackburn’s Swedish international Martin Olsson.

Considering that the Southampton manager doesn't speak English, his protests seemed rather pointless.

I think Clusterbuck's is only a minor if irritating symptom of a much more serious malaise. Bendtner gets fined more for wearing the wrong underpants than others get fined for violence or racism. Ferdinand shows a referee clear disrespect and ManUre get fined because Fergie doesn't do an interview. Topsy turvey or what?

Victor, more should be revealed about Clattenburg`s connections. Could be interesting. He may be after an entry (?) in the Guinness Book of Records. Worst ever referee to become a Pantomime Dame.

It's about time the powers at be realised that every single game that is refereed by Clattenburg produces an incident regarding one of his decisions. He got away with it over the Chelsea saga and he now thinks he is untouchable. He cannot referee without incident and should be removed from the league list.

So no charge for Ferdinand then - What on earth was the point of the 'Respect' campaign, or are the FA popular players exempt from it?

The fracas worked for them, I'd bet that a high proportion of penalties are missed after a ruckus like that. Cynical, moi?

Can anyone explain why the Saints players were upset after the game especially the Saints Manager when the penalty had been saved and it did not afect the match? What good does confronting the ref after the event achieve? Have to agree at least no one stood in front of the refs face and applauded him...total lack of respect.
