Norwich City goalkeeper Declan Rudd has said he is ‘over the moon’ after signing a new three-year contract with the Canaries.

The Diss-born academy graduate has signed his new deal, which has an option for a further year, following a successful season on loan in League One with Preston North End.

The 23-year-old kept 20 clean sheets during 55 games with Preston, experiencing defeat in the semi-finals of the League One play-offs.

“To be here is what I’ve always wanted. I started watching Norwich when I was about six and I joined the academy a couple of years later,” Rudd told City’s website.

“For the club to sign me on a longer-term deal is brilliant for myself so I’m over the moon and really looking forward to the season.

“I’m just going to keep working hard, put everything into training then if I get an opportunity, take it.”

Rudd, who was a regular for England at under-19 level and was capped once at under-21 level, now looks set to be John Ruddy’s regular understudy this season.

He will compete with Mark Bunn for a place in the team if Ruddy is unavailable, with 20-year-old Remi Matthews also providing cover after signing a two-year professional contract earlier this summer.

Former Northampton and Blackburn stopper Bunn is out of contract at Carrow Road next summer.

  • The goal on Sunday was scored because Turner was caught outside the near post ball watching and Martin lacked the basics necessary for a central defender in height and heading ability. Let's hope Adams soon rectifies these matters.

  • Watching the goal scored by Wolves on Sunday I noticed that it was scored from a cross very close to the goal and although Martin couldn't jump high enough to intercept the cross if Ruddy had taken two steps out with his height he should have been able to catch it or at least punch the ball to the halfway line. Sorry I forgot Ruddy never leaves his goal line.

  • You`re going a bit "insiderist", Matty fashion, el dingo...! Don`t tell me Rab C. Butler has a genuine excuse for being a boorish bully on air? One good enough to merit exoneration?

  • Had a chat with a certain top gent at Radio Norfolk yesterday mate. He was a joy to talk to and explained something that I knew but had forgotten about on the technical front that explains what I was complaining about - I must exhonerate Mr Butler. Sorry Rob. I'll tell you more about it some time soon:)

  • It`s the "Shoot the messenger" syndrome, dingo. Btw; that "fat man with the `tache" - you`re not referring to my pal Boycie Phillips are you? We insiders don`t take kindly to you peripheral types dissing our cronies. I`ll tell that nice Rab C. Butler ... then he can give you a thorough beasting on Radio Partridge. That`ll larn yer...;-) Glad Dec has signed. Not at all surprised - he has a future. Kudos to Adams (?) for keeping the lad in his plans and not steering him away to pastures greener.

  • Paul I am as pleased with and for Declan as anyone. I rarely if ever make a negative comment about a footballer who plays for my team. My caveat is that I do not blindly trust certain members of the Board to do what is best for NCFC ON THE PITCH.

  • To sign a player who is also a fan is genuinely heartening. When he talks of taking his opportunity if it comes that includes the scenario of Ruddy departing. In which case Declan's presence would allow the club to spend the (Ruddy) money on areas where the team needs strengthening.

  • Don't you just love it? A really positive story about a great young keeper pledging his future to the club and what do the first 2 posters say? The Board are money mad and the club's a shambles. There really some miserable old eedjits on this site. I reckon if we win every remaining game in the season this pair would still complain that we didn't beat Wolves in the first game.

  • I think its the right time to sell Ruddy, promote Rudd to no.1 and keep hold of Bunn as his deputy, then either look to the Youth team for a 3rd standby keeper or take another aging Nash style keeper on for a year of training ground work and bench warming.

  • Prediction that Ruddy will shortly be off to a Premier Club as McNally realises the profit potential of selling assets NOW while they still have some residual market value. Leaves a vacancy in goal which someone has to fill, could be Declan Rudd? Money!
