Norwich City sprung a late transfer deadline day surprise when the Canaries announced that hotly-tipped Tottenham Hotspur youngster Harry Kane had moved to Carrow Road on loan for the rest of the season.

The England Under-19 striker had been predicted to figure in Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas’ plans this term, but with the London team signing Clint Dempsey from Fulham just before last night’s deadline, the young frontman was allowed to join the Canaries.

Kane scored seven goals in 19 starts while on loan at Milwall last season and also featured heavily in Tottenham’s Europa League campaign.

The announcement was made by the club just after 12.30am this morning, after it initially appeared the Canaries had not made any deadline day signings.

Norwich City boss Chris Hughton told the club’s official website: “I’m delighted to bring in someone of the quality of Harry. He is a very talented young player and has bags of potential.

“He enjoys scoring goals as he shown coming through the ranks at Spurs and during some good loan spells as well.”

Norwich City face Tottenham in the Barclays Premier League at White Hart Lane toda, but Kane will not be available to for the game, just two weeks after making his league debut for Andre Villas-Boas’ side as an 86th minute substitute away to Newcastle.

Kane rose to prominence in the 2009-10 season, firing in 18 goals in just 22 games for Tottenham’s Under-18s, and subsequently went on to represent England at both Under-17 and 19 levels.

He was a key part of England’s march to the UEFA U19 European Championship semi-finals in the summer, and netted the winning goal in a crucial 2-1 victory over France to ensure his side advanced from the group stages.

The Walthamstow-born forward scored five times in 18 appearances during a loan stint at Leyton Orient in 2010-11 and netted 10 times in 27 games for Millwall last season, after joining on loan in January.

That led to him being named the Lions’ Young Player of the Year.

Kane becomes Norwich City’s ninth summer signing, joining Steven Whittaker, Jacob Butterfield, Michael Turner, Robert Snodgrass, Javier Garrido, Sebastien Bassong, Alex Tettey, and Mark Bunn in the Canaries’ ranks.

  • I'm going to be brutally honest from what I've seen of this boy... I think he's a bit of a donkey, harshly put of course, but nevertheless that's what I think of him, he doesn't work hard, he's not technically sound yet and we already have 2 strikers better than him, loaning out Vaughan has been the worst decision this club has made. For those of you that doubt him, let me tell you that he is good enough, he works hard, he does care about the team and he will create chances and score goals, he was very impressive pre-season and his career before Norwich loans included he could always pop up and score, I think this was a panic "quick get someone in", I feel we needed Morison to go out to get our true target.

Mad Brewwalker and his ethersaber vs the Archant enemy, the Trolltroopers, Ged Vader and the Pink Star. Definitely has potential. Try singing the theme tune: E-D-P, E-D-P, dum di dum......

  • I want to give the lad a chance, as he is totally unknown to me. But I must admit to being totally under whelmed by this signing. I wasn't expecting millions to be spent, but something a little more. It looks like a cheapo option just to get a body in to make two for every position. We could have done that from our own youngsters. there are a couple who have been scoring, they'll never grow if not given a chance

  • The accompanying video . . . . jeeeez. Just tuned 19, celebrating a goal like a numpty. I find it cringeworthy when any player does that, but given his inexperience, his few appearances, well . . . ! Certainly he won't let his modesty hold him back. A bit of a turn-off for me already. Don't think our little club will teach him much.

  • A fit Vaughan would have been more useful than Chris Martin. I really hope CM proves me wrong. If Pitbull has a stormer wi` `Uddersfield, we`ll all be sorry, though I hope he does really well and comes back free of injury and raring to go.....for us! I just hope we`re still in the Prem.

Would also like to thank the Archant hacks for the very goog online chat they ran prior to the cut off time for the transfer window, well done lads but a pity that the daily postings on here cannot be as easy and good.

  • Went to bed a little deadline day deflated, but this is a decent morning after pick me up. Based on YouTube videos, if we had only signed Clive Allen too, we'd have a lethal combination. While this is a positive and the lad clearly has potential, I'm still left thinking we'd have been better off retaining Vaughan who's got more experience, was clearly in good form pre season, and who already knew the Norwich set up.

As for Steady On, not sure the point you're trying to make, couldn't really understand what you were saying and quite frankly it doesn't look interesting enough to make any effort in understanding it.

Your fighting agsinst the EDP like their the Empire from star wars and, surprise surprise, you think that if anything bad happens it's all because Vaughan is out on loan. Heres the cold truth, Vaughans out on loan because he's never been able to competitively prove himself and this new kid is probably better.

  • Here's a view on Kane from a Spurs fan after today's game. He played reasonably well in the Europa League last season and looked like he was getting used to the game at that level. I was disappointed that Defoe stayed and Kane left, I would have preferred to see the boy given a chance instead of Defoe who just will not suit a lone striker role. This was my opinion before today's game.
