Norwich City club captain Russell Martin believes the Canaries’ owed Chris Hughton a Premier League win.

Martin insists the battling 1-0 weekend victory over Hull City was the perfect way to respond after a build-up dominated by whether Hughton was still the right man to remain in charge at Carrow Road.

“All the wins are big in this league but hopefully that will quieten down a few people who have said negative stuff about us recently,” said Martin. “It just proves that everyone is 100% behind the manager because he has taken a lot of flak as well – maybe rightly so as a group of players with some of our performances – but we felt since the turn of the year we perhaps haven’t got the results we deserved.

“Hopefully that gives us something to build on.

“Every manager in this league seems to be under pressure if they have two or three bad results. We are the ones who step over the white line so we owed him that one.”

The Canaries now sit in 12th place, five points clear of the current bottom three, ahead of next week’s home league test against Newcastle and Martin, speaking on the Premier League’s official podcast show, is confident they will not be found wanting in the scrap for survival.

“I just think the past two seasons have been good for us and expectations rise. We made some good signings and spent a lot of money for a club like Norwich and I guess that brings extra pressure,” he said. “The expectation is there from within the club as much as it is the fans and the media.

“We have a really tight-knit squad, a great team spirit and that is still really strong. It is a tight league and I expect it to stay that way for the rest of the season. But there has been no crisis here – we just need to kick on.”

  • ….. Steely...It's not Sky who are raising the objections to pubs showing Live Football...they have sold the matches to Foreign Broadcasters as part of their upping payments to PL clubs....No it's The Premier League who have searched for a loophole, and want to add to their bank balance....I quote from Google News..... “.THE Premier League is planning prosecutions against Swansea pubs it alleges have been showing Swansea City matches on foreign satellite channels in breach of copyright, it has been reported. In an investigation lasting four months The Premier League has arranged visits to nearly 200 pubs in south Wales.”...And that's what you call a pub crawl....someone else footing the bill!.....

  • It got through in the end, Steely - but Stew has rendered my attack on Sky null and void. Shucks, attack them anyway; they had it coming. Surely Archant don`t block references to W€th€rspoon`s? At least Hillair Belloc isn`t `offensive`.

  • Brew - I had that problem a few times when trying to comment on a certain chain of pubs. Whenever I used the name then they used to come back with me for being offensive. My drinking companion being a bit tight always tries to head us in the direction of one of their establishments when its his shout.

  • Brew I just heard on R. 5 live that Sky are commencing prosecutions of pubs that have signed up to the 'alternate' provider of soccer. They are starting with 100 but hope to eventually prosecute 4000. Nice people. Using the alternate ,usually Swedish or Middle Eastern, is legal according to European free competition laws. Sky have got them, or think they have them, on some obscure copyright infringement whereby PL logos might be displayed. Sounds desperate to me. Anyway one landlord came on to say he was paying Sky £1400 pm and could only show their restricted coverage. Using the 'foreign' source he pays £250 pm and has access to every PL game played. More importantly the 3.00pm Saturday afternoon slot. Long live the pubs.

  • Agree with you ref the Glass House, Steely. Nearly got crushed by a woman in a motability trolley once, as she crashed in from the patio to the bar, ignoring all obstacles between, like people. Oddly, she later had no trouble going back outside on foot to have the obligatory GV roll-up. Came back in time for her All-Day Chloresterfest and double Vodka Red Bull.

  • Perhaps the players owe more to the club, including the fans rather than just to the manager, after all they are all paid very well to give 100% every match, not just when it suits them. Far too often, they appear to throw the towel in as soon as they go a goal behind.

  • Let's not re-write history. We were minutes away from a demoralising 0-0 draw. Would Hughton still be in charge? Nothing much has changed. Beat Newcastle next week and we will start to believe. Three points away from home would also be welcome.

  • Brew - strange activity on here today. Your original Sky comment took ages to appear. Then it appeared way down the list. Anyway its a good 'un. Don't know if you can help Goldie out with the internet viewing ? An expensive alternative would be to take on one of those pub contracts at £250 pm and use it at home. Sounds expensive but I think my brother pays Sky about £80 pm and has all the cr@p that they churn out. Yeah I think the Arch have some tie in with JDW. The one called the Glass House really is the pits. Horrible place frequented mainly by (offensive word removed).

  • Stew thanks for the update. What it amounts to really is that Sky couldn't prosecute because of this EU law (must be the only EU law that has ever been of any benefit to this country). Moving on then the PL blood suckers think they can achieve the same with this copyright infringement.

  • Hi, Steely. Sky is a huge parasitic amoeba; ingesting all in its path and dumping its egesta on all and sundry. Do Sky have rights on PL logos now?? Hasn`t it become a dirty world? Like many bad parasites, Sky will probably kill its host, leaving the legacy of a new global macrobiological malaise; Sky Amoeboid Dysentery. Responsible for wiping out sport as we knew it, Scotty. I`ve been in a few pubs where the licensee has chickened out of `alternate` channels for fear of the Mega Amoeba`s shadow being cast over them. £1400 a month?? Got to sell a lot of extra booze to cover that - unless they start charging admission to the telly room... is that also forbidden by a greater authority? Between a rock and a hard place, they are. I wonder if Radio Partridge is safe..... Hillair Belloc wrote "From the towns all the Inns have been driven: from the villages most.... Change your hearts or you will lose your Inns and will deserve to have lost them. But when you have lost your Inns drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the last of England". Sky`s the Limit; a Cautionary Tale. :-(

  • True, TK, specially the fans. Everybody else involved in football makes money out of it, one way or another. If you dive down to the bottom of the `food chain`, it is fans that provide that money, even if it has to be ingested by Sky before they supply their egesta for sponsorship. So the only way fans become relevant is by withdrawing en masse from the food chain. Unlikely. Even if Norwich were to lose 10,000 Season Ticket Holders (ho-ho), I`m sure modern technology could cut and paste virtual fans into the empty seats for broadcasting purposes. They might look more lifelike, too. A new Hans Christian Andersen could`ve written a fairy story about it. The king was in the altogether....
