‘It is still all about us’ was Chris Hughton’s mantra after Norwich City emerged the big winners in the latest round of the great escape.
The Canaries were the only club in the Premier League’s bottom seven at the start of the weekend to bolster their survival bid after a 2-0 win over the Black Cats and defeats for all their direct rivals. Hughton will take every bonus going but the City boss revealed he was quick to ram home a simple message to his players at full-time.
“In the changing room we spoke about the fact it had been a good day for us and how results can go for you and that is terrific, but we have to make sure we get the results we need,” he said.
“More important than results elsewhere going for us is that we made sure it was a good result here because, ultimately, it is what we do between now and the end that will determine our fate. Last weekend we lost and other results went against us. It has switched right around this weekend and no-one can really predict what will happen the following weekend so I don’t focus too much on anything other than what we are doing.”
City moved onto 32 points after beating the Wearsiders and Hughton realises 40 is the traditional gold standard to guarantee survival
“On the averages 40 is the benchmark, yes, but at this moment no-one knows what the number will be. I don’t think about that,” he said. “We have just got three very valuable points here.
“It gives us three points in a group of teams all fighting and having difficult times and it is important to have as a big a gap as we can to the bottom.
“The games will become even bigger from now, but if we take a fair chunk of what we showed here then we have a good chance.”
