Chris Hughton - Norwich City’s players believe they can shock Manchester City

Chris Hughton’s biggest task this week will have been convincing his Norwich City players they can shock Manchester City.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Canaries’ boss readily concedes the club’s 7-0 mauling in the north-west before Christmas was the most depressing point of an inconsistent campaign and Hughton knows any attempt to set the record straight will hinge on the collective resolve of those who emerge from the home dressing room.

“There won’t be too many who expect us to beat Manchester City. The ones I would hope feel differently are my players because we know what we are capable of,” he said. “We will have a fantastic crowd and we have to give them something to get behind us. That will be our message to the players. We know it’s a tall order and perhaps those games when no-one expects you to get anything can end up the most pleasing. We will give everything for that to happen. You need a majority of your players at their very best and you hope the opposition do not have one of their better days.”

Hughton has plotted home wins against Arsenal and Manchester United in the past and those peaks will need to be scaled again to inflict a second consecutive Premier League defeat this week on Manuel Pellegrini’s high rollers.

“You have to play as a team, which means being hard to beat and resilient, and we have to be able to exploit some of the spaces they leave, but to do that you have to stay in the game,” he said. “That can mean an expansive, open, attacking type of approach or it can mean showing plenty of resilience, as we did here against Arsenal and Manchester United. On both those occasions we were compact but we also carried a threat. We have to prepare to play against a fabulous team with so many attacking options, but we haven’t planned for individual players - it is about coping with where they work the ball and into what areas of the pitch.”

Hughton was at the Etihad earlier this week to watch Chelsea demonstrate there are chinks in the armour of a club who had smashed a 115 goals in all competitions before the end of January.

“I have to say Chelsea were excellent and they can do that. They have that level of quality,” he said. “You are always looking at situations that you can exploit and benefit from. We all know the facts. They are a wonderful, offensive football team who can score goals at will. That is the challenge. That is the exciting part. I thought Chelsea played very well but it was one of those type of games where Manchester City had a couple of early chances and if they had put one of those away then it could have been a different outcome.

“Its not rocket science to state with their attacking options you have to be solid and there might be large periods when we have to defend well.

“You also have to be able to test them. If you are sitting back for 90 minutes there is probably only going to be one result.”

  • "A fabulous team with so many attacking options." "They are a wonderful, offensive football team who can score goals at will". Is Hughton talking about Norwich City? No ! Once again he is heaping praise on the opposition! Even before a ball is kicked he is laying the foundations of his post match excuses. I don't think the players have any belief that they can get a result against Manchester City. Hughton is just going through the motions of "firing up" a team which has shown no motivation or belief in the previous 24 league games. Anyone who witnessed the humiliation of the 7-0 away drubbing will be in little doubt that Hughtons words are hollow and empty. Once again we are facing defeat, and 26,000 will turn up to see if Norwich can keep it to below a cricket score of goals against. He should have gone, but he his still here spouting rubbish and promising improvements which never happen.

  • Got to agree with kenfoggo that the usual preafter match excuses are pointless and less meaningfull than Snodgrass´s coments on "we need to score more goals". I mean really, there isn´t anybody who is the remotely interested!!!! Get stuck in and show yourselves to be footballers worth the name. PLAYERS! Give your public something that both you and we can be proud of. OTBC

Of course I'll go and hang onto some hope until the last minute. Why do we do this to ourselves? Must be mad.

He is also quoted in various press interviews as saying we need to defend well, play well, hope they have an off day and, if all that happens, get a bit of luck too. Sadly, that seems to be where we are in most games now

But its too late for anyone to get their teeth into this confidence shattered squad. For me Mcnally has to take a lot of the flak for not being brave enough to change this before xmas because the writing has been on the wall for a long long time and he chose to sit back.

  • That rules out Finningham then! There`s been some discussion recently about the geographical distinctions between true Scandinavia and Denmark & Finland, and the connection between Finns & Magyars etc. So I`d guess you`re in Finland? I`d be quite surprised if we scored twice vs ManC - be better if they scored fewer! On another topic, I`ve just looked up Yobo on Wiki and it states that he has signed on loan `with a view to a permanent move in the Summer`. Anybody heard that from any other source?

  • True,YFB; I had my money on 2-1 to Norwich. FINN.BLUE, isn`t there another clone of Gedro labelled `Rob Steroo`? I`ve seen that one on the EADT boards, trying to wind up Ipswich fans in a similarly tedious and formulaic manner. Some claim there`s a link to a `real` person called Scott. Does that ring any bells? Thinking of Suffolk`s finest, `The Darkness`, now - it`s the bit in their Xmas hit about bell ends and the way they ring peace. Gedro must`ve reminded me. As for the match, I think the changes forced on Hughton by the absence of Robert & Gutierrez gave Redmond and Pilkington the chance to express themselves. Also, I thought Bradley Johnson looked a different player; he picked out some good passes and got stuck in - as always. Yobo looked impressively strong.

  • For me it is about how we play today. If it is just an abject roll-over and tap-out like it was in the reverse fixture, then that that is it for the season. We will obviously do not have the desire to extract the vital points that we need in the next run of games and there will be nothing to build on before we get the "run in from hell" at the end of the season. What was it Gimli said? Something like "Certain chance of failure, slim chance of success, what are we waiting for!"

But they have not been invincible when away from home. It needs N City players to step up, for once, and run themselves into the ground and not give Man City players any time on the ball. Whether this will happen is very doubtful . Against lower opposition City players flounder. The attitude of CH must affect his players because they do no play as though they believe in themselves. They are certainly bellow Premiership standard but with fight they might just survive and allow a rebuild for next season. Fail and a drop through the divisions would be a major possibility.

I do not see us finishing with 11 men on the field, way may as well sacrifice the 'Fer' position and put Whittacker or Garrido in as a third holding midfilder, Their wing backs will charge fwd so if we play with 2 pacey (thats snoddy out) wingers and Hooper or RVW (whichever can run the fastest for longest) then we might grab a hoof and counter. but I hope we get no corners as Im tired of us conceding from our own corner!
