Norwich City boss Chris Hughton insisted the Canaries were denied another clear penalty on top of Grant Holt’s stoppage time spot kick saved by Southampton’s Artur Boruc in a goalless Premier League draw at Carrow Road.
Holt was adjduged to have been pushed by Luke Shaw in the dying seconds but Boruc guessed correctly to dive to his right to push away the skipper’s drilled spot kick. Angry Saints’ boss Mauro Pochettino confronted referee Mark Clattenburg on the pitch at the final whistle but Hughton was adamant City should have been awarded a penalty in the first period when Holt was tugged back by Shaw inside the six yard box.
“On the penalty decisions we certainly should have had one in that first half period when (Luke) Shaw pulls back Grant. It was our first penalty of the season. We certainly deserved it. Grant has got himself ball side of the defender. Do I think there was contact? Yes, I do. Whether there was enough to give a penalty of course he has to make that decision and he has an assistant on that side to make it. If we think that was soft certainly the first one wasn’t. “What you have got is two teams fighting for their lives. Southampton is a good team. They have a lot of good attacking players. They have got quality offensively. They pack midfield. I decided to go 4-4-2 today which means perhaps we were going to be a little bit more open but you hope you get the benefits in the other part of the pitch. I thought we had the better chances.”
Pochettino apologised in his post-match media briefing to the match official but the young Argentine could face disciplinary action for his reaction.
“In that moment you do not really control your emotions or your anger,” he said. “I thought it was a complete unfairness to us. That is my opinion. What I said to the referee stays on the pitch. I know I should not have gone on the pitch and I apologise but sometimes you lose control a little bit - us managers really have to control ourselves but I am playing the game as well on the sidelines.”
The Canaries are reportedly closing in on the signing of Blackburn’s Swedish international Martin Olsson.

Talking about Leicester City, who remembers their big centre forward called Frank Large who Kevin Keelan downed with a perfect left hook, took his jersey off and walked towards the tunnel before the ref got to him. Oh, and the first player to wear white boots wasnt Laurie Sheffield, it was a guy called Albert Bennett

Not intended as a "dig" sharky. ;-) My, aren`t we getting sensitive on these boards now? All terrified of giving offence!! Your post just prompted me to muse on how much Hoots has quietly refreshed the squad. His 1st choice starting XI could be: Bunn, Whits, Turner, Bass, Garrido - Tettey, (Johnson) - Kamara, Becchio, Snods, Butterfield. That`s 10\11. A bit far-fetched in parts, I confess! Can`t leave BJ out.

Stew, if we go down I agree Hoots will have failed. It`s a results game (cliché time, folks). If we stay up the way we`re playing, it`ll do fine - as long as it`s seen as a consolidation, no more. Then, next season, a bit of progress would be good. The Swansea model preferred to the Stoke model, perhaps? It wasn`t that long ago "The Charlton Model" was the `thing`. Maybe one day everybody will be citing the "Norwich Model"? I bet quite a few clubs, like Leeds, are doing that already? Tempus fugit!

Stew your comments appreciated but certainly not a case of being happy with the current position and performance but I think the root cause is McNasty rules the club and he wanted financial stability, which really is no big fault. I think and hope that if they can consolidate and keep their position we will see a big forward move to come and no reason why Hoots cannot be the man to take it forward. Think patience is the word for all of us!

sharky, interestingly the starting line-up had 6 Hoots signings, 4 Lambo and 1 Gunny (Holt). If not for injuries, Whits,Tettey & Ruddy would probably have been on the pitch, making it 7\3\1 and if Hoots had included Wes instead of Pilks, 7\2\2. So he has turned the squad over quite a bit. Current 1st choice back 5 could be all Hoots` (Ruddy, Whits[?] injured, of course).

Wasn't LauriesSheffield one of the first players to wear white boots instead of standard black or brown. Perhaps Holahan and Snnodgrass could wear one coloured and one black to help them realise they have two feet, one on each leg. Thought the Sierra Leone weather Saturday would been to Kamara's liking

Was that record 42,000 crowd vs Leicester? alan clark, this new mystery troll; if it failed to get thro` the ether, how did you detect its existence?? I have a lot to learn about the eldritch world of IT! On football, I don`t think many Norwich fans really have unrealistic expectations. It`s just that, after last season`s cavalier offering, it all seems a bit dull and, even worse, formless. Some promising players have seemingly ceased to promise, eg Howson and the two Bennetts. I suppose we can`t help casting an envious eye in the direction of Swansea, with their relatively elevated position and a Trophy in the cabinet (not to mention a place in the Europa League). None of us know what constraints Hoots is operating under and what deficiencies he detected in the squad. Those deficiencies may well have materialised under the previous manager, but he didn`t hang around long enough for them to be exposed. There`s a pattern there, somewhere.....

....Blackdog! I may as well comment on your contribution. Of course you are correct in much you say, but then so are the majority of others wasting their lives on here. I think we fall into three catagories :- those that are Happy with the way things are going,- those that think we could be doing better, and those that wonder if we have the right leader..... I fall between the second and third and honestly believe we would have done better if the manager and his sidekicks were better at their jobs. The material they have is Premiership quality but the way it is deployed is Conference Standard..Clinging on to life is not what we should be aiming for. Thought that I would pop in for a peep this morning and I feel vindicated in my decision to abstain, the idiots, the trolls, the comments have not improved at all. Why can people not see that Norwich is a small family type of club punching well above it's weight. There is no big benefactor, no big middle eastern money! Hoots may be unpopular but for heavens sake look at what the man has achieved and the tools he had at his disposal! To stay in the Premier division where the money is will be a fantastic achievment. This club was nearly down and out like many others, Portsmouth for example, the debt was been considerably reduced and McNasty has been very prudent all round. There will be a stable platform to go forward, stop moaning and appreciate what now exists.

The bike I rode then has been discarded many moons ago. Over the years we have watched the ups and downs of our club to where we find ourselves now..... I stress that it is My opinion that last season was the summit of our History. The club has developed extremely well under the present board, and there was no reason that it should not continue this season . Alas! that has not happened and at present we look like a mountaineer clinging on to fragile hold for dear life.... Builders Build! Zebbee ,Kevin Hector made his England debut on the famous night at Wembley in 73 when Poland held us to a one all draw. This ended our chances of WC qualification. Ramsey scandalously held him back to come on as sub in the 89th minute despite Chivers looking lethargic all night. Hector in those two or three minutes had a header and a goalbound shot both cleared off the line by defenders with the 'clown' in goal beaten.

I will add, in self-defence, that a sequence of ellipsis marks - they are not a series of full-stops! - is a frequently employed device to indicate that there is more to come or that the reader should put in their own completion. Also, that D. H. Lawrence got away with beginning sentences with ‘and’ and ‘so’! No matter; I’m being pedantic. Had to wait another five or so seasons. Like Stew, I can't hep looking back and recalling highlights and conveniently forgetting the dull games, low attendances, standing for hours (couldn't do it now!). Bigging up evry team we play doesn't inspire any confidence in what is a medioce buch of journeymen. We punched above our weight with a 10 game (almost no goals) unbeaten run. When< oh when will we ever see a decent attacking game of football under this regime?

Strangely enough I sort of agree with both Lobbo AND Dark Moon. I think Hughton's doing very well with the players he has. I also think the squad is in desperate need of improvement. The defence (sadly with the exception of Cafu) had an ok game. Midfield and forwards are in need of a shake up. Snodgrass, my player of the season so far was uninspired to say the least and Howson did himself no favours. Early on Pilks looked ok but his injury gave us problems. Wes isn't great in Pilkington's place. As for the forwards, Kamara isn't ready for a starting place yet even though he could have got 2 if Holt had had his passing boots on. Holt only really started playing halfway through the 2nd half. I still trust Hughton but if there's no clear out of players and decent strikers with pace next season my confidence will start to be eroded.

Are there any of our players under performing. Are our tactics right! I really would like to know what you think. Do you think we'll stay up and if we do, do you think the players we have and the way we are playing will keep us in the premier next year. Do tell 'dark moon'.

All we need is, a couple of play makers, you know, the ones that are the beating heart of a team and can thread a defensive splitting pass, a couple of ruthless strikers, you know, the ones that can fashion a goal from nothing, a couple of players out wide, you know the ones that can beat a man on the wing with speed and agility and get in the perfect cross, and an inspirational captain, you know the one that can motivate any player having an off day and lead by example. I'm sorry to say but most of the players we've got are playing like 'dead men walking'.

Never felt better thank you Waclor; nor do my opinions change on a monthly basis. Although the sense of your two ripostes was slightly obscured by poor punctuation, they were very sweet and almost - but not quite - clever. And I can tell how hard you were trying. In regard to the football (let’s try again): so, you run your proverbials off in filthy conditions, with no encouragement from your ‘supporters’ (the Snakepit excused; wonderful as ever!), and then get booed off the pitch. That’s really good for morale isn’t it? I noticed that (Snoddy aside) there was very little appreciation from the players after the game. Don’t blame them….

Okay I maybe mr positive glass half fill, type of guy, but watching the match on sky,if only 60 minutes of it, I have seen worse than that from the so called big six,in lesser conditions! In that first half, the pass between howson to kammy, which did make it,though kammy had to readjust as the ball had slowed due to the ground, would've been superb, leaving kammy a run into the area or shot! Instead by the time he had readjusted to meet the pass,he was closed down! The commentator stated the ground is deceptive in certain areas, and howson wasn't to blame...The game may have panned out different in normal march weather.... I have to watch and rewatch all our games, from both sky,and motd, while transferring, and editing, from my sky hd to my Sony hd,for my own season collection, which I include all experts analysis etc, which isn't ever included on my official season DVD...and love to see things in the cold light if day, sometimes 2 weeks or more, later ( just finished all the qpr game including editing, and we were more than pre. Quality that day!) When I do the same to this match,23 weeks from now,I will look closely at how the conditions, affected us,not forgetting the pressure because how important it was not to allow Southampton to move closer to us in the table! Great performances against Swansea away, man it'd and aresenal at home,( and west ham!! If you still have a recording of that,re watch it!)etc were easier at that stage of the season to play and express..,now is the time to not lose to rivals in our position... ,

No Atlanta you're not ignorant and many of us are probably guilty of some overeaction but the fact remains that we have only scored more than one goal in a league match two or three times, most of the players who were here last season seem to have deteriorated and the football is so negative and boring. I for one fear for next season. You don't read the Guardian do you?

Got to agree with Dark Moon. Having followed game on Pink 'Un sight and then heard Canary Call, I expected an awful game, and I can understand how it would seem that way watching it in freezing, wet weather. Watching it on a 7-hour tape delay in comfort over 4,000 miles away, I thought the players coped well with conditions, and, yes, too many passes went astray, and we only had 3 shots on goal, but there were several other chances for both teams. If one of theirs had gone in, I hate to think what the comments would have been -- even if we had only one point less. If one of ours had, we'd be praising CH's tactics and celebrating near certain safety. OK, I'm ready for the onslaught...just don't call this Norwich boy an ignorant Yank!

The Guardian is written by and for people who spend their lives in a parallel universe where others work to pay taxes to keep them in their ivory towers and, what they ridiculously regard as work, whilst being praised by their peers adds nothing to the general well being of mankind. Their grip on reality matches their spelling ability. They would increase the aid budget and either deny the existence of unemployment or suggest that it could be cured by increasing the size of the civil service. Now isn't this a crass bigoted generalisation, Dark Moon? Just remember you started it.

I give up. It can surely be proven that the county of Norfolk aggregates the lowest IQ of any in the country. You kind of understand where Jeremy Clarkson is coming from and why Alan Partridge is able to hold down a decent job here. And, by the way, be careful what you wish for folk. Chris Hughton (our best manager since John Bond) may decide he’s had enough and move on if these mindless comments and the pathetic support at Carrow Road persist. Then what? No-one could have done a better job than Hughton has so far – and if he manages to keep City up this season he will have surpassed anything we’ve seen in the last 3 years. Period.

Let's all please stop making excuses and accept the fact that we were awful once Again and if Southampton had taken their chances they would have been out of sight and we would have been left with egg on our faces. We cannot pass a ball, no cohesion, no tempo to our game, seems that we have also forgotten how to shoot. The tactics being used by CH clearly does not suit our players. Only two teams have scored fewer goals than us There's your problem CH sort it out. Also please stop talking up the opposition, and give our lads a bit of belief instead.Still think we will go down, if I'm wrong then serious changes need to be made in the summer.

Lobbo - To say we are not Premier League standard is just a stupid thing to say and obviously intended to entice an argument! We were never in danger of relegation last season and in my opinion and many others (not all you armchair fans who have nothing better to do than sit on here and whinge all the time) we are not in danger of it again this season either. There are still 9 games left this season and to be almost safe with this amount of games to go is fantastic. Now don't get me wrong i'm not saying that the football is great at the minute but as long as we stay in this league then that's all that matters and with only loosing 3 games at home all season we must be doing something right! If you are such a true fan who will support City til you die why don't you do just that and support them instead of slagging them off all the while!

Only too able to recollect a stream of idiotic bellowing and booing from so-called ‘fans’ around me at Carrow Road this afternoon and then, foolishly on my part, tuning into Radio Norfolk’s agonizing post-match phone-in as I undertook a tortuous journey home, I feel less that I have just attended a football match than that I somehow gate-crashed the Stalham Players’ stage production of ‘One flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’. In very adverse circumstances, two whole-hearted teams produced a good game of football this afternoon. Look on the ‘The Guardian’ website and you will see it described as ‘deceptively thrilling’. Note to some (most?) here – ‘The Guardian’ is a newspaper without that red bit at the top on the front page. It has some intelligent articles in it that you have, perhaps, never quite understood.

If Holt had scored that penalty I was ready to write a letter to Southampton to apologise. Not because it wasn't a penalty, it was, but because we played as bad as we have played since the Roeder days and if Southampton could hit a barn door we would have been stuffed. I have spent much of the last week in hospital but the 90 minutes today was more excruciating than anything else I have experienced this week. Not good. I still firmly believe we will stay up but we need another win in the next 3 or 4 games to put it to bed.

My main beef with Hoots is that he appears to prefer to ignore a problem rather than take action. In reality there is NO competition for places because he rarely makes unforced changes. What have Elliott Bennett and Johnny Howson done recently to justify selection? Steven Whittaker and David Fox have proven ability as midfield players but can't get a look in. Hotts operates with a 16 man squad.

Perhaps awful conditions to play in but there really is no excuse in not beating Southampton today. We struggled to keep possession and allowed Southampton far too much space and time. Johnson aside, our midfield was awol and lacks any consistent creativity. Kamara and Becchio are going to find service from this lot about as regular as a restaurant waiter on sick leave. Howson terrible - inept passing and put us under pressure a couple of times around our own goal area. As for Holt - I think his head is somewhere else...

I just hope, if we get into our 3rd consecutive Prem season, Hoots`ll be able to inject a bit of style & belief into our play. Can'r agree on Mike Walker being our best manager - he inherited Dave Stringer's team who had already shown signs of greatness, proved he was a great organiser and motivator once he went to Everton proved that he was incapable of buying and managing big money players - just as PL has to date ......... MW did work wonders though as did PL, O'Neill is the one that should never have been allowed to get away when he did.

I want to give Hoots the benefit of the doubt and say that he is trying the best he can with the resources he has. But I do ask the question, what on earth do they do on the training ground because the very basics just do not exist. The players seem to have forgotten how to play not only as a team but as professional footballers. They can'y keep the ball, pass the ball, cross the ball or hit the target on a regular basis. Having an off day is one thing, doing this continually is completely different. And that is very worrying. I just hope Hoots is somehow able to arrest this and get the team playing together again. otbc

No excuses, Norwich are not premier league standard. Holt is a shadow of his former self and obviously has forgotten what the offside rule is. I can't agree with people who say Snodgrass is good player, and whinge, whinge whinge, does he ever stop. Our passing is poor and done without conviction. When Bunn played a short ball we were closed down in an instant. When he kicked long it was always won by Southampton. Who has got the brains in our team, just tell me. Well done Southampton, they had 15 shots to our 3, their passing was better than ours, their individual sk ill levels were better than ours and their man marking was better than ours. I have seen nothing in our last 6 games that gives me any hope or enjoyment. I expect more from players on the wages that they are on. Norwich were clueless and useless. Bunn was man of match for me. Looking at the post Christmas performances, he seems for some reason to have lost the dressing room, resulting in below par performances from a demotivated team (or are they individuals?). The body language on the pitch is awful, and they're just not supporting each other in the way that they should. What's happened at Colney behind the scenes?
