Chris Hughton was prepared to enjoy the bit of business he has managed so far this month – but any more will have to wait.
The rumour mill continues to turn in the background with the Canaries mentioned in passing.
Any interest in Everton centre-back John Heitinga looks unlikely to succeed given West Ham and Newcastle have been knocked back. It now seems a cut-price £1m fee looks destined to see the Dutchman head off to join Serie A side Roma. Yet that could still work in Norwich’s favour if reports in Italy are to be believed – although City’s a reported approach for Roma’s experienced Argentine defender Nicolas Burdisso was apparently turned down.
Meanwhile, there has been speculation suggesting Hughton would be interested in bringing Reading midfielder Danny Guthrie to Carrow Road – the pair having worked together at Newcastle.
“We’re still working, the same as everybody else,” said Hughton. “There hasn’t been that much business done elsewhere and I think that’s down to how difficult it is in this window.
“But we are continuing to work as hard as we can.
“We continue to say we’re looking to improve on our form, we’re looking to improve as a squad and that means if we’re able to make additions then we will do.
“Certainly not on our mind at the moment is losing players.”
The Guthrie link rings truest due to Jonas Gutierrez’s own post-Newcastle reunion with Hughton at City.
“Jonas played close to 200 games at Newcastle and he knows the Premier League very well,” Hughton added.
“But he’s enthusiastic and he was a very well-liked player up at Newcastle by the supporters. It’s nice to get that one through the door.”
