Chris Hughton - Gary Hooper is Premier League class

Chris Hughton is confident Gary Hooper will prove he belongs in Premier League company this coming season ahead of a match-up with Liverpool’s prolific hitman Luis Suarez.

Hooper moved south from Celtic to test himself against the best and Hughton admitted they do not come any better than Suarez, who City must try and subdue in Wednesday’s Anfield league test. Hooper’s second top-flight goal sunk Crystal Palace at the weekend after an injury-hit start to his Norwich career.

“He came here to prove he could score goals in the Premier League,” said Hughton. “I felt for him at the beginning because some strikers hit the ground running and it comes naturally and others take a while to adjust and you can see that across the league, but to miss the first four weeks when you join a new club is so difficult. I’ve been impressed by his work outside the box. He has what I regard as classic centre forward movement. When you get the ball into good positions you can tell he is someone used to playing up top and scoring goals. I read one of Gary’s quotes after the game when he said at Premier League level you get less chances and no disrespect to Celtic but in that league he would be used to getting numerous chances.

“It is tougher here and you have to try and make sure your percentages are higher. He is now in the team and having a run of games and getting fit and stronger. We need to make sure that we provide him with opportunities to score goals like we did on Saturday.”

Suarez plundered four in both Premier League games against the Canaries last season but Hughton insists the Reds’ carry multiple attacking threats.

“He is as good as any top striker in the country at the moment and on his day he is difficult to handle,” he said. “He is a huge threat because he is an outstanding footballer. It is not a coincidence he has scored so many goals. He is a threat from first minute to the last minute, but it’s not only Norwich who have been on the end of that, he has scored goals against everybody. They have other good offensive options with (Jordan) Henderson who breaks from midfield and (Phillippe) Coutinho and (Victor) Moses.”

Hughton confirmed at Colney yesterday he has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the trips to Liverpool and West Brom this week.

“That is a plus for us,” he said. “We don’t need any more injuries because in certain positions we are quite stretched. We need to make sure over this heavy period we don’t get any more. I have decisions to make with three games in such a short period. You look at someone like Wes (Hoolahan) and it was his first game for a while. I chose to leave Michael (Turner) out because he had missed a few days training and he was on four bookings. The time in between the games is more about recovery and a bit of training for the ones who didn’t play. This week is not going to be about physical training but the preparation.”

  • I have no objection to opposing views. The problem is that every time Stew Pydsodd is asked a perfectly reasonable question, like once Hughton and Snodgrass get removed who does he replace them with, all we get is some sort of rambling semi coherent abuse. Not sure if he thinks he's funny, clever, insulting or what?

Never encountered anyone on the internet that types in such a way. You might be trying to be a bit of a "character" but it's coming off as a bit creepy and weird if I'm honest. I digress though,I want to talk football.

  • …... Manc Canary... Nice to have a 'one to one'...Yes that is the contributor that I was referring to....but if you had been in from the start you would realise that SHE (not He) only came on here to insult others in the nastiest way possible... Many easy going people couldn't take her constant insults and disappeared...I take an element of credit for getting her banned from these boards....and in doing so renamed her 'The Tyneside Tea Lady'...She has now resurfaced under many names and is beginning to sail close to the wind again. She is, what we would call in Norfolk, 'A Nutter'... Watch comments from said persons, and you may change your own opinion!......Would rather talk Football and Norwich City seriously in the future...We have a problem with the teams performances at present, and I try to make serious suggestions as to what adjustments are needed...Follow closely my offerings... and feel free to dis agree, but they are all done with the very best intentions!.....

  • I'm foolishly going to comment on the article, and would that Gary Hooper was prem class, but scoring a goal against a championship side[ yes I do mean Palace], does not elevate him to premier league class. But then who signed him, Hoots is not going to say anything different......and yes stew I have noticed a little vitriol spilling out from some of our contributors. Lets them down eventually.

Could look at dropping Bassong, and giving Becchio a go at Centre Back...Who (notPaul) knows, he may have discovered a hidden gem and a possible Captain, not afraid to speak out!.....

  • Trying to de-value my opinions by labelling me as someone else is a pretty weak move. Not sure how you can you say you want to make proper football comments after suggesting Becchio go at center back and become captain. Both of those suggestions are ridiculous. From what I've seen you,Slovenia and a few others are the abusive ones around here. Maybe you are all the same person.

  • Well making him captain is ridiculous because he's already proven himself to be not exactly a man of great character this week and although his only contribution in the last game was a defensive header I'd rather leave the defending to a proper defender and captain like Bassong who looked shaky at times on Saturday but I felt grew into the game and obviously provided an excellent save. The rest of your post is pretty hard to follow I'm afraid. Who's "Gary Docherty"?

  • So which game is CH saving Turner for I wonder, Liverpool or WBA. I think Bennett is a better bet against Suarez, as he is slightly quicker on his feet so presume Turner will face WBA at the weekend. Perhaps we can repeat our famous victory in front of the Old Cop on Wednesday, that would be a turn up for the books.

  • one pen and one in open play, not really premier class for me, when his runs are picked up and his sharpness improves, he maybe will net a few, but at moment he's a bit short of premier class, I think Jarome of Crystal Palace is a better player than Hooper, he put his self in loads of spaces on sat but was not given the ball... thank God

I did used to read his posts, and those from the people who disagreed with him. To be honest, I think it's more likely that he's got tired of arguing with people on here and doesn't bother anymore! He was quite damning of others I recall. But it's a bit far fetched to think that someone is that bothered about winning opinions on the comments section of a website like this, that they would invent new pseudonyms in order to make it look like they have support from others.
