Chris Hughton admitted Norwich City were below-par against Southampton but insisted the Canaries could still have edged a goalless Premier League affair at Carrow Road.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Grant Holt’s stoppage time penalty miss and Maya Yoshida’s last-ditch tackles on both Holt and Robert Snodgrass during the second period were two of the best openings on a day of home frustration.

Southampton’s smooth attacking style triggered a steady stream of chances at the opposite end, with the Saints’ making the most of their numerical advantage in midfield.

“What you have got is two teams fighting for their lives,” said Hughton. “When you go 4-4-2 you know you are going to give away some possession in the middle of the park. They are playing five in there and they have good footballers. When the statistics come out regarding territorial advantage they will probably have had more possession than what we did. Was it one of our better performances? No, it wasn’t, but I still felt over the 90 minutes we restricted them to one good chance in that second half.

“Robert had the best chance of the game and of course we miss a penalty. The game opened up and we got in a few good crosses so I felt we might be the ones to get on the end of it. Overall, I felt at this stage of the season it was two teams fighting hard so a draw was a fair result.”

Sporting Kansas loan striker Kei Kamara was paired in tandem with Holt as Hughton deployed two out-and-out strikers for the second consecutive Premier League home game.

“I thought he did well considering it was his first start,” said Hughton. “I had to think long and hard about it and whether the decision was the right one. He gave us legs up front and something a little bit different.

“When you play two up front you have to give them good enough service in the areas that you can hurt the opposition. Going 4-4-2 meant perhaps we were going to be a little bit more open but you play that way because you hope it will reap a benefit in the other part of the pitch. On chances I thought we had the better ones.”

Wes Hoolahan was omitted from the starting line-up to accommodate City’s reshaped frontline, but the Irish international replaced Anthony Pilkington after another early hamstring-injury exit for the wide midfielder. City’s medical staff will assess the extent of the injury over the coming days, but Pilkington has already been withdrawn from the Republic of Ireland’s provisional squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

“The reason I chose to go with Pilks is with Snoddy on the right and Pilks on the left we could get into wide areas, get crosses in and that would be a good avenue for goals,” said Hughton. “I was perhaps not too disappointed to bring Wes on because I thought he might be able to give us a little bit of a grip of the ball in the middle of the park. With their numbers they were good in there and with him playing a little bit more infield that might given us some control of the game.”

  • I hope not, Doc! I`m new to this streaming thing and have had mixed results. I pass my ticket opportunities to others `cos I just don`t enjoy the pre and post match hassle of attending regularly. Too much foul language in some areas of the ground & not being able to see half the time (the standers) make the overall day out not so much fun for me, sadly. What I do do is support local pubs that (legitimately) screen the Sky games. Pubs are at greater risk than Premiership footy. And I get to have a few beers!

  • It is noticeable that the people who follow Norwich City by watching all the games on television, for various reasons, are being openly criticised by the fans who attend at Carrow Road. They are told they are not entitled to have an opinion about the team as they don't pay the players wages. Well Norwich benefitted to the tune of £45 million from Sky last season and next year that figure will be a minimum of £60 million. I think my Sky subscription and that of others has allowed them to pay football clubs these ridiculous amounts of money. I think if it was left to the money paid at the turnstiles to run football clubs most of them would have gone to he wall by now.

  • Mick, I'll try to explain my thinking reTwitter this time. (I'm happy to agree to differ on tattoos, I just don't like them). We have a situation in football where journalists take delight in misinterpretations and half truths and the internet is full of people who love twisting things to match their own point of view. Just look at the numerous interpretations of Hughton's words on this page! It does appear that no matter what the man says someone will want to condemn him. Letting players Tweet away is just a recipe for some to get themselves into trouble, Barton, Cole, Ferdinand immediately spring to mind. Just look at thevolume of rumours when Holt tweeted about his family going up North recently, move to Celtic, fallout with Hughton, ec etc. I don't agree with some of the comments about overpaid players (these seem to come from people, not Stew to be clear, who sit at home and watch the games so don't pay the players' wages anyway) but I DO think that now is the time for the team to be concentrating on football to get us out of this rut, not on their mobile phone technology.

And I think it's midfield, the decisive through balls aren't happening; the runs from deep. I don't have an answer but perhaps there's a fear factor of losing possession. Back to the idea of Russell Martin a free role behind midfield to cover forward runs that take midfield players out of position temporarily?

I confess to watching all of City's matches on television and I consider that I am entitled to voice my opinions. Snarky is obviously aware that it is not systems that win matches but the skill of the players and their ability to adapt to whatever the system of play is for a particular match. At the moment we don't seem to have a midfielder capable of providing good service to the player or players who play up front and similarly tha wide players seem incapable of providing decent crosses for the central strikers. With the lack of good service and the strikers inability to create scoring opportunities themselves we end up with the current trend in our matches of virtually no attacking football of any substance. If you are happy with the current state of affaires Sharky that's fine, I won't criticise you for not agreeing with me but I have been watching City since 1959 one way or the other and will continue to do so.

Hoots` jigsaw is far from complete, we just need to get over the finishing line & build for next season - the sooner that happens the better, so a WIN would help! Then Hoots & Ewan Chester will know sooner what they have to do and McNally will know what the ££££s situation is. I am not going to worry overmuch about any abuse that may come this way when I say that not all is perfect at Carra Rud. Something is missing on the coaching scene. Just an opinion, not a Heresy. We are currently the worst attacking force in the Prem. Outside that 10 match run we have won just 1 of 19 games, gleaning 11 points. GD -19 (?).

Probably not a good time to Change managers but the way City have been playing lately and the almost total lack of goals and victories a change in outlook may prove to be a good move. He has changed a team capable of producing some good entertaining football and satisfactory results into a dull, boring, predictable defensive minded outfit who don't know where the next goal is coming from let alone when they are likely to win another match. The manager and his team seem unable to change the system and identify the obvious failings that exist. If he can't admit that he can't do the job the board should tell him so and start making plans to replace them all in the summer. It is obvious to anyone with knowledge of football that the whole package at Carrow Road apart from one or two of the players are just not up to it and need a thorough overhaul.

  • What is wrong with you lot. At no point does Mr Hughton state that Norwich had the edge over Saints. He may be a lot of things, and not a lot of good things at the moment, but he is always fair and honest. And has a budget to work to. I do think he builds up the opposition too much, and there is a huge problem between the back six and rest of the team going forward. I, like many on Saturday, endured it all. I thought Howson was going to be the all action fit we needed, but he has been poor at best. Fox has had limited playing time for a reason. He is not a premiership player, and two Norwich managers of completely contrasting styles agree on that. We are well run club with strong values. If a few of you moaners have got a more than a few million quid or have suggestions as to where we can find the money to fund a creative player or two who can move the ball quickly to a yellow shirt and shoot straight, there is nothing much wrong with the team. And I stress the word team, of which we are all part.

I don't think it's unrealistic to think these players can play with more quality and fluency, after all most of then did last season. Contrary to popular belief you can play good football without spending millions and still stay clear of relegation. I not unrealistic I am pleased with our points and league position it's better than I could have hope, but a few quality and exciting performances might be nice. Lastly Holt has looked a shadow of himself (not literally obviously) all season, Saturday he looked unfit, his touch, passing and shooting was very poor, but he did do well at falling over shame about the penalty, but regardless we all have to shout we love holty, or we are traitors.

It would also help a great deal if the players could pass to a team mate on matchdays, and play with a bit of flair and add some tempo to their game, and please CH can you make crossing a ball a priority at Colney. We are far too defensive, the tactics that GHCC have instilled into the players clearly does not suit them, everything we do on the pitch is becoming predictable and totally boring, yawn yawn,at one point i decided to look at my Indian Take Away Menu to select my Sat night meal ! The players are working hard and so is Chris Hughton. 2 more wins in 9 games and we're safe for this season. No complaints from me. Hughton has set a really solid defensive foundation this season that provides a good foundation for next season, where hopefully we can build on that by developing midfield and striking options.

  • I caught a reply of the game and managed to see from 30 minutes in until half time. From this 15 minutes + stoppage time it seemed that it was all City and endeavour. The weather was truly shocking and the pitched looked awful -unusual for Carrow Road - so I assume the playing conditions were dreadful too. Time we stopped moaning and got behind the team. We are in a very similar situation to what we were in last year, just needing half a dozen points from the last 9 games ! I think we should be happy with that and the great achievements of the last four years are continuing despite a change of manager. Lets get this season across the line and give Hoots the chance to build a stronger squad for next year ! The finishing line is in site now. OTBC

  • There is a school of thought that says that if Holt had been able to pass the ball accurately Kamara would have had 2 goals, if Snod and Hoolahoop could kick with their right feet there would have been another 2 goals. That's 4 good chances in the 2nd half none of which would appear in the stats as a shot on target. Not sure what Hughton is expected to say in these enforcedly bland interviews, "we're useless and we know we are", that would be good for team morale. I do agree about Howson!

  • What game was CH watching? They had 15 shots to our 3 ...they missed a couple of guilt edge chances in front of goal - we had a dubious penaly saved - the Saints had most of ball, and were by far the better team on the day! I think CH might be looking at games through rose tinted glasses or he needs a trip to Specsavers - but then again this might be the reason he actually think Howson is a good player !!!!

  • It's comments like this that prove Hughton has lost the Plot. We were lucky to come away with a point. Yet again we sat too deep and allowed a team to force there style of play onto us. How can we learn from our mistakes if CH refuses to admit we're making those said mistakes.

  • Got the greatest respect for CH but evidently he wasn't watching the same game as me. Our midfield is lacking the creativity needed to service Holt, Kamara, Becchio. Lots of running, jinks, twists and turns from Snodgrass and Hools but that final quality ball through to our strikers isn't anywhere to be seen.
