Scoring the winner against a Norwich City side was a strange feeling for Thetford Town’s Ian Fancett.

The left-sided player came off the bench to score a 71st-minute glory goal in the fourth round of the Norfolk Senior Cup on Tuesday night, to condemn City’s Under-21s to a 1-0 defeat.

As a Canaries supporter, it was an odd sensation for Fancett, but the adulation of a bumper crowd at a joyful Mundford Road more than made up for it.

“I followed their FA Youth Cup results obviously a couple of years ago and keep an eye on the youth team because it’s the future of the football club that I support,” Fancett said.

“It was a good feeling. There’s plenty of talent and the thing for us was, do they fancy it on a Tuesday night at Thetford Town, and that’s what we tried working at.

“I think they did, I think they took it seriously but credit where credit’s due, our boys deserve a massive pat on the back.”

The furniture maker has been an integral part of the Thetford squad in recent seasons, helping to win promotion from the Thurlow Nunn First Division in 2012 and even being called on as a goalkeeper at times.

His low right-footed finish past City U21s’ keeper Remi Matthews, following some battling work from Town captain Scott Leech, sparked wild celebrations – and came as a bit of a surprise to him.

“To be fair, I came off the bench and the lads had done a great job and held them at 0-0,” Fancett continued.

“Tactically we were spot on, everyone performed to what they needed to do and for me to come on and score the winner just capped it off, I’m really chuffed for the boys.

“I’m all left-footed so when it came on to my right I just thought try to keep it low and curl it round the keeper and it went straight under his foot, so I was quite happy with that.

“They came out with a gameplan and that was to try and get at us early, keep a lot of the ball, but we had a gameplan as well and tried to match them and press high and force them to do the long ball and it fell into our hands, so we were really pleased.”
