Saturday grassroots football in West Norfolk suffered a blow at the weekend when Norfolk Junior Cup champions Reffley Royals folded.

Six days before beginning the defence of the title they lifted at Carrow Road in May the North West Norfolk League Division One side were disbanded by temporary boss Paul Taylor.

The stand-in manager, who saw his side lose 2-0 to West Winch on the opening day of the season, said: “My head said no but my heart said yes about trying to keep the club going.

“But we just couldn’t attract anyone in and you can’t run an adult team with a maximum of 11 or 12 players willing to play. I didn’t want to fold the club in a month or so having not been able to fulfil fixtures.

“I apologise to the loyal players for giving them hope, especially Ty Wilson who has been amazing in trying to keep the club running, and the league for making the decision. The Yaxham manager (set to face Reffley on Saturday) was gobsmacked when I told him. It’s not one person’s fault. It’s just of those things that happens.”

The decision comes on the back of a summer of discontent which had seen joint-managers Robbie Back and Marc Curson resign citing a lack of player commitment.

On the pitch, there were goals in every direction with an average of six per game across the league’s four divisions.

River Lane Rangers, Docking, Snettisham Maroons and Redgate Rangers Reserves all hit opposition for seven goals while new-boys Tilney hit six at Watlington.

• Ex-NWNL outfit Redgate made it three wins out of three in Anglian Combination Division Six with a 6-1 home win over Harleston Reserves. Stevie Fisher, Stuart Deadman, Jack Lincoln, Danny Lincoln, Dean Twaite-Smith and Jimmy Rudd scored. Debutant Matty Prudence claimed three assists.
