Norfolk’s Amber Ratcliffe insists her best is still to come after getting her historic Australian Youth Olympic Festival adventure under way in Sydney.

The 17-year-old became one of the first golfers to represent Team GB for more than a century just by simply taking to the greens of Sydney’s Twin Creeks Club yesterday.

But, despite Britain being tied for first in the team event with hosts Australia, Ratcliffe carded a three-over-par score of 75 to leave her with work to do in the individual event.

Ratcliffe, who is a member of Royal Cromer Golf Club, sits 10th after her opening round but insists she is not about to throw the towel in any time soon.

“I wasn’t really hitting the ball well in my opening round, I had a few dodgy holes, hit a few dodgy shots and don’t think I did as well as I could have done,” said Ratcliffe.

“I am disappointed with how it went, but I know that I haven’t put myself out of contention. I have not too much damage and there is still plenty of golf to be played as it is a four-day event so I have time on my side to come back.

“It is really hot out there, but it is the same for everybody so I just need to keep on playing. I have never played in heat like this before, so it is a good learning experience.”

Whatever the end result in Australia, Ratcliffe will go down in history but that isn’t stopping the Norfolk teenager from setting her sights high.

“It is good that golf is now in the Olympic Games, hopefully it will inspire more youngsters to get involved and try the sport,” she added. “This has definitely inspired me to keep working hard to try and make the team for Rio 2016 but first I want to help Britain get off to a good start with a medal.”
