Evergreen Norfolk batsman Carl Rogers has decided to retire from Minor Counties cricket after the final match of this year’s festival.

Rogers will be making his 159th and final championship appearance in the three-day game against Hertfordshire at Manor Park, starting on Sunday (11am).

He made his debut for the county as a 19-year-old against Cumberland at Barrow in 1990, and his record of 10,176 championship runs - with a highest score of 173 made in last year’s festival, one of 19 centuries - for Norfolk has been bettered only by Michael Falcon, while his aggregate of runs has recently taken him to eighth in the all-time Minor Counties list.

He has also taken 54 wickets in two-day and three-day cricket since his debut in 1990, along with 147 catches.

Rogers, who captained Norfolk in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and plays his club cricket for Great Witchingham, stood down from the one-day side at the end of last season with a limited-overs record of 2,076 runs, including a highest score 151, and 52 wickets from 73 appearances.

Among his one-day highlights was a century at Lord’s in 1997 when Norfolk beat Shropshire in the final of the Minor Counties one-day competition.

The Norfolk side against Herts shows one change from the draw against Cambridgeshire, with Ashley Watson replacing the unavailable Sam Arthurton.
