Norwich carpenter Malcolm Brooks is carving out quite a name for himself in the pool world.

The 57-year-old from Horsford was a member of the four-player England A seniors team which brought home the World 8-Ball pool title from Blackpool.

The England A team beat Malta 5-1 in the final with Brooks' team-mates being Keith Brewer, the current World Senior champion, Stacey Vine, the 2013 World Senior champion, and Nigel Olding.

Those three were in the England A side which lost to the England B side – including Brooks – in the seniors final at the Euros earlier this year, which means the local man now has the distinction of winning European and World titles in the space of just five months.

'When I returned from Malta in February the next week I had to requalify for the England squad,' explained Brooks.

'Doing that successfully, I then had internals at Leicester where two spaces were up for grabs in the A side.

'I qualified, winning six out of my eight matches, and once in the A side I knew I was keeping excellent company with Stacey, Nigel and Keith and had a very good chance of getting a world title.'

Brooks and Co had kicked off their challenge with a 7-2 win over South Africa A and followed up with a similar scoreline against England B. Their third group game ended in a 9-0 hammering of Northern Ireland before scoring a narrow 5-4 win over Scotland A. There was time for another 9-0 win, with France A on the receiving end, while Malta were beaten 7-2.

The team's first defeat came against South Africa B, when they went down 5-4, but they bounced back with a 7-2 win over France B, a 5-4 defeat of Australia, a 6-3 win over Ireland and a 7-2 victory over Scotland B.

India were despatched 5-4 and Reunion Island 8-1 in the final group game.

That put them into the semi-finals, where they beat South Africa 5-1 with Malta beating Australia by the same scoreline.

Brooks wasn't the only Norfolk success in Blackpool – Attleborough's Tom Cousins retained his world singles crown after beating Giuseppe D'Imperio in the final.
