Hingham’s Caterham barely had better luck than their last outing at Silverstone – although they did at least get a car to the finish at the 2012 British Grand Prix.

Last year, both their cars failed to get past lap 11 after a pair of hydraulic failures ruined their home race. This time, having failed to break through Q1 on Saturday the Norfolk outfit were hopeful their new upgrade package would see a significant performance gain on the track.

However Vitaly Petrov never got to find out, as his Renault engine let go on the trip from pits to grid. The failure was terminal – the Russian retiring 15 minutes before the race was due to start.

Heikki Kovalainen did at least run to the finish, although he was cut adrift in the usual no man’s land between the established teams and fellow 2010 new boys, taking 17th.

Renault apologised for their failure, while Caterham are already looking forward to the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim in a fortnight’s time.

“I am obviously disappointed to have had my race end before I had even reached the grid,” said Petrov. “But despite the issue today this has been a positive weekend. The car has worked well in each session and I’ve been really pleased with how the engineers and mechanics have helped us keep making steps forward with the set-up.”

Caterham technical chief Mark Smith added: “We know we have progressed but we just were not able to show it today, so we will focus on doing so at the last two races before the summer break in Germany and Hungary.”
