Lowestoft bounced back from Saturday’s defeat in emphatic style to equal their record winning margin in the Ryman League with a 7-0 thrashing of Wingate & Finchley.

There was no inkling of what would follow in the first half with Wingate looking quite sharp in attack and in fact it was the visitors who were first to threaten with a Craig Davies header cleared off the line by Adam Smith.

However, it was Lowestoft who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute. Jack Ainsley’s free kick was headed on by Dan Gleeson and fell to Michael Frew to shoot home.

Wingate were close to an immediate equaliser but Ola Sogbanmu’s header hit the Lowestoft upright and bounced away.

Lowestoft doubled their lead in the 27th minute with a Frew cross being powered into the net by the head of Jack Ainsley.

Any fears of a second half Wingate revival were dashed within eight minutes of the restart with Lowestoft doubling their lead. Firstly in the 50th minute Ahmet Rifat handled the ball just outside the area and Adam Smith scored direct from the free-kick.

Just three minutes later Smith was brought down as he raced into the penalty area and Jack Ainsley calmly converted the spot kick.

Lowestoft really had the bit between their teeth now and pressed forward in search of more goals.

In the 62nd minute Jake Reed was played through the middle and used his pace to get clear and stroke the ball past Cain Davies for the fifth goal and straight from the restart a similar move saw Jack Ainsley run through to complete his first hat-trick for the club.

With the game won Lowestoft sent on their three substitutes and one of them, Connor Doddington, was left with a simple tap-in when Weatherstone let a Frew cross slip past him.
