Lowestoft Town joint boss Ady Gallagher was delighted to see his side progress in the FA Cup on Saturday – but insisted the club won’t allow cup competitions to detract from their ultimate goal of promotion.

The Trawlerboys secured a third round qualifying date at St Albans next month after victory at Wealdstone whilst the club go to Lewes in the FA Trophy preliminary round on Sunday.

Gallagher hopes the Blues don’t get caught in a situation like last season where progress in the cups saw them playing catch-up in the league with eventual champions Billericay Town building up an unassailable lead.

“We don’t want to lose any focus on the league – I would prefer a league game this weekend but this is the situation and we will deal with it,” said Gallagher. “It’s great to progress in the cup competitions and do as well as you can in them but we don’t want to get stuck behind other clubs in terms of fixtures.

“Billericay went out of the cups early last season and we ended up playing catch up on them so you have to manage the situation as well as you can.

“It’s something to bear in mind but we want to go as far as we can and we will have to manage the squad to that end.”

Whilst Gallagher acknowledged the Blues are not going to win the FA Cup, the FA Trophy is a competition the club could go far in. Fellow Ryman League Premier outfit Wealdstone reached the semi-finals of the competition last season and if Lowestoft get a bit of a luck with the draw there is no reason why they couldn’t achieve a similar feat.

“The FA Trophy is another competition the club obviously wants to do well in,” added Gallagher.

“Wealdstone showed last season what can be achieved in it by getting to the semi-finals.

“Lewes away is never easy – we drew there last season and they will be a difficult proposition. We want to stay in the competition as long as we can.”

Lowestoft are likely to make changes to the side that won at Wealdstone last weekend with the management team keen to keep everyone in the squad involved.
