Blues director of football Craig Fleming wasted little time in swooping for the 30-year-old, who will sign a two-year contract at Crown Meadow over the weekend.

Defty, who scored 161 goals in 405 appearances during two spells at the Linnets, looks to be the ideal replacement for Matt Nolan, who has decided to leave Lowestoft as he cannot commit to the amount of travelling involved.

Defty is looking forward to making a seamless transition to the Trawlerboys having played with several members of the current Blues squad already.

“It was an easy decision to be honest,” he said. “I have played with a lot of the boys at Lowestoft before during my career and they are a good set of lads.

“I’ve spoken to them a lot and they have always said what a good club it is to play for with a good fanbase and I’m looking forward to getting started.

“Sometimes it can take a while to settle down in a new team, but that won’t be the case with Lowestoft because I already know a lot of them.”

Several clubs were alerted to Defty’s availability last weekend with big spending Spalding also in the hunt but the lure of playing under Fleming swayed the odds in Lowestoft’s favour.

“Everyone knows what a good coach Flem is and I’ve always got on well with him,” he said. “He’s very ambitious which is always very good to hear and hopefully I can bring something to what is already a very good side.”

Defty admitted he feels like he has a point to prove after the King’s Lynn legend was told he was no longer wanted at The Walks.

“It was a bit unexpected (to leave) but football throws these things up,” added Defty. “When one door closes another one opens and it’s up to me to show that I’m still a good player.

“I’ve played at Lowestoft’s level before so I know what it’s about. I’m confident I’ve still got the ability to play at that level.

“Perhaps it’s a chance for me to prove a few people wrong but that’s not the main priority obviously. I want to enjoy my football and going to Lowestoft is a really exciting move for me.”
