Thetford Town’s attempts to end a run of 13 matches without a win were thwarted at high-flying Godmanchester Rovers on Saturday, ahead of this weekend’s derby clash at Diss Town.

Second placed Godmanchester edged a 1-0 win against Thetford, who remain in 18th place in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division.

“We performed really well, we certainly didn’t deserve to lose that game,” Thetford boss Mark Scott said.

“There were a few missed chances which proved very costly but equally we had two blatant penalties that were not given, but when you’re in this sort of situation, nothing goes your way.

“I couldn’t fault our lads for any of it. We’re not getting the results but the performances are there, but that makes not getting the results equally as painful.

“Who knows, we’ll probably play badly at Diss this week and win!”

The derby clash offers Thetford the chance to make up ground on Diss, who are 10 points better off in 14th place and lost 3-1 at 15th-placed Stanway Rovers on Saturday.

“They are our closest rivals, so there is always a little bit of needle,” Scott continued. “We’ve got several players from the last four or five years who have swapped between the two clubs, so it should be a bit spicy.

“More realistically, it is another opportunity to get some points and our players are as desperate for the three points as I am, and obviously there’s a little more in it for the players who have moved from club to club.”

Scott will have to make changes to his side as Sam Bond, Steve Harley and Luke Catchpole are all suspended for the match, but he is hoping to have skipper Luke Bailey and Sam Bryant fit for selection again, with Kyle Parish having a 50-50 chance of being fit enough to play.

“Everyone knows what is expected of them and everyone is here for the right reasons,” Scott added.

“The players are as desperate as me to get the points we need and are creating the chances. We may not be scoring them but we are at least doing the right things, we have just got to take our chances.”

Saturday’s match at Brewers Green Lane is a 3pm kick-off.
