Lowestoft Town’s stretched resources were exposed as they went down on home territory.

The Trawlerboys went into the game with a number of key personnel missing and with more added in the run-up to the game, they kicked off with the only 11 first-team players who were fit and available – and with a bench made up of just four inexperienced players, from the club’s reserve and youth teams.

The hosts had the better of the early exchanges, forcing a number of corners without being a major threat – and then the first disaster struck on 20 minutes when the visitors went ahead when a flicked header from a throw-in beat Curtis Haynes-Brown allowing Charlie Moone the space to score.

Moone struck again six minutes into the second half, sneaking an effort past unsighted keeper Ashlee Jones – and while the two-goal advantage may have flattered Hampton & Richmond, it proved a bridge too far for Lowestoft.

The Blues tried to get back into the game, with Sam Gaughran and Jack Ainsley combining well, but Ainsley’s shot had the power taken out of it by a defender and the keeper claimed with ease.

The visitors then produced another piece of clinical finishing to wrap up the points just before the hour mark, claiming goal number three from chance number three. Luke Wanadio was found in plenty of space out on the right, delivered the ball into the middle and Thompson was on hand to head in.

Lowestoft claimed a penalty when Manny Osei touched the ball to Jake Reed, who went down in the area, but nothing was given.

In the final analysis it came down to Lowestoft’s lack of cutting edge when it mattered – and Hampton’s ability to convert the opportunities that came their way.

Defeat means Lowestoft are eighth in the table, a dozen points behind leaders AFC Hornchurch, and they will be desperately looking to get back to winning ways when they travel to struggling Thamesmead Town on Saturday.
