Landlords banking on England having a good showing in Brazil say they have been counting the cost after Roy Hodgson's men were sent packing after just two games.

Pubs across our region were hoping for a minimum of three packed houses from England's group games, with the potential for more in the all-or-nothing knockout rounds.

But two close defeats against Italy and Uruguay meant the Three Lions' third game against Costa Rica became a dead rubber – leaving fans cold and the tills closed.

Roseanne Whitworth, landlady at Peggottys, in Great Yarmouth, said the hangover had even lasted until Saturday, with punters staying at home after spending big on England's first two matches.

'We did well for the first two games, but as soon as England were knocked out it just died,' she said.

'Before the summer we assumed we would get at least three good nights out of the World Cup and we had two, but the third was a complete letdown. Then on Saturday we found we were quiet again because people had spent their money on the first two games.'

It was the same story at The Murderers, in Norwich, where landlord Phil Cutter said he hoped for some foreign fans to fill the gap.

'We had the Spanish Speakers Society here for Spain's first game and they told us they would use us as a base for the tournament, but then Spain went out.

'On Sunday night we had two dozen Greek fans in to watch their game too, but then they got beaten.

'I read somewhere the government were expecting a billion pounds to go into the economy from England's games, but all of a sudden they are out and nobody benefits,' he said.

Bob Cameron, landlord of the Coach and Horses, in Norwich, said fans had 'lost interest' after England's exit.

'Obviously the best games are when England are playing.

'People might watch the other games if they happen to be in here and there's something on, but they aren't going to come out just for that.

'After years of watching England you never expect too much, but we did think we'd get at least three games out of it,' he said.
