King’s Lynn Town have announced the surprise departure of defender Sam Gaughran.

The 27-year-old re-signed for the Linnets in the summer of 2015 and has helped Ian Culverhouse’s team mount an Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division promotion push this term.

The former Norwich City and Peterborough United trainee, who played for the Linnets as a teenager, played all of Monday’s 1-0 defeat at rivals Kettering which saw Lynn lose top spot to their opponents.

It has proved the last of 118 appearances for Gaughran, scoring five goals, with a club spokesman saying: “Everybody involved with King’s Lynn Town Football Club would like to thank Sam for his time at the club and wish him all the best for the future.”

Gaughran, a coach for League One club Peterborough’s academy, previously made 93 appearances for Lowestoft and captained the Linnets on several occasions.
