King’s Lynn Town 3 Hereford 2: Battling Linnets mount stunning fightback to see off Hereford
King’s Lynn Town turned on the style in front of their biggest gate of the season for their biggest test of the season.
Two goals down at half-time, the Linnets produced an almighty comeback against a team rated not only as title favourites but one of non league football’s genuine giants. And they were slain as Lynn marched back to the top of the table.
Lynn have blown teams away in the early stages of numerous games this season, and they again started on the front foot.
Michael Gash got his head to a Michael Clunan free-kick before Ryan Hawkins was just inches away from a Frazer Blake-Tracy ball as Lynn started well. But danger is never far away - and when Lynn lost possession in their own half, Keyon Reffell earned Hereford their first corner which Lynn couldn’t deal with and, with just eight minutes gone, Jordan Liburd stabbed home.
A cracking game was evolving and The Walks was ready to explode when Michael Gash poked the ball straight at keeper Martin Horsell before the excellent Simon Lappin saw a free-kick go inches wide then flashed a shot wide on the other side of goal – Lynn were down, but clearly not out.
But just as Lynn were looking dangerous, it all went wrong: in time added on at the end of the first half, Billy Murphy floated a ball into the area, Street came, but Mills saw his run and flicked it over the keeper with his first touch.
The mountain was there to climb: and the first steps were taken just four minutes into the second half when Norman’s low cross was converted by Gash from close range.
The volume cranked up again on 62 minutes when Hawkins - on his 23rd birthday – powered his way in to the area and shot across the keeper and into the far corner. It was breathless, brilliant stuff – would there be a winner? Super sub Toby Hilliard provided the answer in sensational style stabbing the ball home as it pinged around the Hereford area.
