King’s Lynn Stars head to Coventry tonight, hoping to keep alive their slim hopes of a place in the Elite League play-offs.
The sensatonal 53-40 victory over Lakeside on Wednesday showed there is plenty of life left in the Stars after a season riddled with injury problems.
But they had to do it the hard way, after going eight points behind after the opening two heats. A tactical ride win from guest Tai Woffinden in heat six with Lasse Bjerre in second place sparked a revival, which led to the team winning by 13 points.
Now they need a repeat performance – only a maximum points win at Brandon tonight if their play-off hopes are to remain alive.
Once again, the task is made tougher with the Stars needing to rely on three guest riders.
Former Coventry rider Chris Harris steps into the number one position as Niels-Kristian Iversen competes in the Grand Prix series on Saturday, while at number two, rider replacement was set to be in operation for Richie Worrall, but his meeting for Newcastle has been postponed and he can now ride for Lynn.
Captain Mads Korneliussen features at number three. At reserve Jason Bunyan and Ryan Douglas step in for Nicklas Porsing and Kozza Smith respectively.
Linus Sundstrom makes his debut for Coventry. Sundstrom has ridden for Rye House in the Premier League, and Ipswich and Peterborough in the Elite, and has always shown a liking for the Coventry track.
Skipper Scott Nicholls steps up to the number one position, whilst the Bees will use rider-replacement for the injured Michal Szczepaniak, and youngster Kyle Howarth covers for broken leg victim Stuart Robson.
Bees promoter Mick Horton said: “We have to start to rebuild, and I’ve been a fan of Linus for a while now.
“Friday is our last Elite League meeting and we’re desperate to finish on a high. It will be a good opportunity for the fans to come see Linus – he wants the support, we want the support and it should be a good night.”
Coventry: 1 Scott Nicholls, 2 Rider Replacement, 3 Grzegorz Zengota, 4 Olly Allen, 5 Linus Sundstrom, 6 Kyle Howarth, 7 Aaron Summers.
King’s Lynn Stars: 1 Chris Harris (guest), 2 Richie Worrall, 3 Mads Korneliussen, 4 R/R, 5 Rory Schlein, 6 Jason Bunyan (G), 7 Ryan Douglas (G).
