Gary Setchell pulled no punches as he described his side’s defensive display “the worst in four years” following their heavy defeat to Ashton United on Saturday.

Setchell’s straight talking has won him many admirers and he was in no mood to change after the match.

“You would have too say that’s our worst performance of the season,” bemoaned Setchell.

“That’s up there with the Matlock’s (4-0) and the Cambridge City’s (5-1) from earlier in the season.

“You would be very disappointed with that kind of defending at under 14 level, let alone level three of non-league.

“We still haven’t kept an away clean sheet this season and if you are really serious about doing anything in football that’s one of the things you must do.

“My two centre backs have been destroyed all afternoon and maybe we develop something of a soft centre when we are on the road. We seemed to have no snap or zip today and our plan B didn’t work so I have to say we have had a particularly bad day at the office and given ourselves a mountain to climb in regards of the play-offs – that’s something we won’t be talking about for a while I think.”

The Linnets are next in action tomorrow evening at Trafford Park, Wroxham in a Norfolk Senior Cup semi final (kick-off 7.45pm).
