Long-term injury casualty Lewis Kerr made an emotional return to the Adrian Flux Arena last night as the Lynn Stars ended their Elite League season on a winning note.

Kerr was making one of his first public appearances since sustaining a serious head injury at the beginning of last month following an horrific accident while competing for the Newcastle Diamonds in the Premier League Fours.

Prior to the meeting, the Stars, who had three guests in their line-up, fittingly named Kerr as non-riding captain for their final bow of the campaign.

Speaking to the fans, Kerr, who was discharged from Addenbrooke’s Hospital a month ago, said: “I’ve picked up a lot over the last couple of weeks and the headaches haven’t been so bad.

“I was at Mildenhall on Sunday and here tonight so I’m definitely getting the bug back. I’d just like to thank everyone for the support I have had, it’s been unbelievable.”

The meeting itself was a nip-and-tuck affair with some explosive riding from both sides as Lynn salvaged a little bit of pride after last week’s embarrassing home defeat to the Leicester Lions.

Elite League riders champion Jason Doyle, guesting for Niels-Kristian Iversen, came within a whisker of the track record in the opening heat, recording 59.37, as Lynn stormed to a 5-1.

The home reserve pairing of Ashley Morris and Simon Lambert, deputising for Kerr, repeated the dose in the next.

Swindon hit back with a 4-2 and a pair of 5-1s, with Lynn asset Lewis Rose among the points, as the play-off-bound visitors levelled the scores a third of the way through the action.

Lynn regained the advantage with maximum points in heat seven after Kenneth Bjerre came out of nowhere to pass Scott Nicholls and follow Doyle home in second.

Newly-crowned Premier League riders champion Ulrich Ostergaard, Lynn’s third guest of the evening, took a tumble in heat eight and Swindon were awarded the points with the Robins heading towards a 5-1 before the Dane’s demise.

Nicholls found a way past Nicklas Poring and Simon Lambert in the first shared outing of the evening and, with Bjerre being easily overtaken by Aaron Summers in the next, Lynn went into the interval trailing by two points.

Doyle’s third win on the bounce helped redress the balance before two heat advantages saw Lynn build up a six-point lead going into the final two races.

Ostergaard produced the goods to wrap up a Stars’ victory in the
penultimate race and the dynamic Doyle completed a paid maximum on the night as the hosts raced to a 5-1 in the last.

Lynn Stars: Jason Doyle 14+1 (5), Nicklas Porsing 8+1 (4), Robert Lambert 10 (5), Ulrich Ostergaard 3 (4), Kenneth Bjerre 5 (4), Simon Lambert 6+1 (4), Ashley Morris 6 (4).

Swindon Robins: Troy Batchelor 5 (4), Aaron Summers 8+1 (5), Nick Morris 5 (4), Scott Nicholls 10 (5), Grzegorz Zengota 4+1 (4), Charles Wright 5+1 (4), Lewis Rose 3+1 (4).
