A young speedway rider has been released from hospital after spending over a week in a coma due to swelling on the brain.

King's Lynn Young Stars rider Darryl Ritchings, 19, was racing for his home club Swindon at their Abbey Stadium when he was flung head-first into a fence on April 3.

Mr Ritchings, a father of one, was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for specialist treatment for bruising on the brain and also suffered a broken nose and ankle as a result of the impact.

He was brought out of sedation last week and is now well enough to continue his recovery at home.

Swindon Robins boss Alun Rossiter said: 'It's fantastic news and we are so pleased for Darryl and his family.

'The only thing I would add is that Darryl has a badly broken ankle which will need working on, but when you consider what he's been through this is a great piece of news.'
