Buster Chapman believes British speedway will benefit from Niels-Kristian Iversen’s decision to ride for King’s Lynn Stars next season.
The Danish ace was yesterday announced as the seventh member of Lynn’s line-up for the 2013 campaign after enduring an agonising wait to see if he was allowed to return to the Norfolk Arena.
Iversen’s parent club Peterborough Panthers had blocked the move until the British Speedway Promoters’ Association gave Lynn the green light to sign the 30-year-old on loan for a third successive term – an opportunity Chapman couldn’t turn down.
The Stars’ promoter said: “It’s great news for the club. Niels is a world-class rider, our fans love him and he clearly loves being with the Stars.
“Obviously it could have been sorted sooner, but thankfully it is sorted now. I believe that not only our club but the whole sport will benefit from his presence in the Elite League this year.”
The three-time World Cup winner, who will ride in this year’s Speedway Grand Prix series, was top of Stars chiefs’ wanted list after enjoying a scintillating spell as the club’s number one last season.
Peterborough-based Iversen, who became a Panthers asset in 2005, but hasn’t raced for the city club since 2010, made it publicly clear from the outset he wanted to return to Norfolk. And he admits he’s delighted to have finally put pen to paper on a deal well before Lynn’s season opener – against the fierce rivals who own him.
Iversen said: “I was either going to return to King’s Lynn or not ride in Britain at all. I am so glad to be back as it’s a great club with great people.
“I believe we have a strong team this season that can challenge for honours so I can’t wait to get started, especially with our first two matches, home and away, against Peterborough on the same day (March 29).”
Rory Schlein, Mads Korneliussen, Simon Stead, Nicolai Klindt, Sebastian Alden and Kozza Smith make up the rest of the Stars’ 2013 team.
