Former England international Jo Ashmore is hoping to do Norfolk proud in this week’s Senior Ladies British Open Championship at Hunstanton Golf Club.
Ashmore tees off tomorrow alongside 90 other players, some of whom have come from as far afield as the USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Spain, Germany and Holland, along with players from all over Great Britain & Ireland, in a bid to lift the coveted title.
The 54-year-old, a member of Barnham Broom, will also do battle with fellow county hopefuls Eppie Zandwoort (Eaton) and Hunstanton members Jean Johnson and Sue Meadows.
“I just hope I play well. I just want to go and do well for Norfolk,” said Ashmore, who has good memories of Hunstanton, having reached the semi-finals of the Senior English Ladies Matchplay Championship on the Norfolk coast in 2009.
“I love Hunstanton, it’s a lovely course. I’m really looking forward to it,” added Ashmore, whose preparations, however, have been hampered by a troublesome back injury.
“I’ve not been able to practise how I want to, but I’ll go out there and give it my best shot. You’ve got to plot your way around and shots into the greens are key. Obviously keeping it on the fairways helps.”
The three-handicapper’s first goal, though, is to make the cut, which comes after two days’ play and 36 holes. Forty players will then go into Friday’s final round hoping to still be in contention.
Meanwhile, Angie Allsopp, Hunstanton Ladies Captain, is looking forward to watching a keen contest unfold over the full three days.
She said: “The club is delighted to host yet another major ladies golf championship.
“The course is in terrific condition and should provide an excellent test. We look forward to welcoming all the players and their supporters to Hunstanton.”
Hunstanton is well used to welcoming top-level competition, having hosted five British Ladies Opens, five English Ladies Opens and two Senior English Ladies competitions, albeit this is the first time the course has hosted the Senior British Ladies Open Championship. Spectators are welcome to attend.
