It was a weekend to remember for Downham Town after they followed up their Alliance Premier Division title triumph by beating Brooke in the final of the NACO Cup at Great Witchingham on Sunday.

Downham captain Duncan Lanchester won the toss and elected to bowl on a dry hard pitch.

It was a decision which proved to be a good one as after 17 overs Brooke were 48 for 6 following impressive opening spells bowling from Addam Todd and Dan Ward.

At 68 for 7 many spectators were looking at a very early finish but Brooke skipper John Habershon and Tom Nudd had other ideas.

In a careful 54-run partnership the pair restored some order to the game before Habershon was out for a fighting 38 off 55 balls. Nudd continued the rebuilding work before being bowled by Todd for 34 of 63 balls.

The only other Brooke batsmen who reached double figures in a total of 145 in 43 overs were James Leck (26) and Jon Block (11 not out).

For Downham Ward produced the first 'five for' in this year's competition with 5 for 18 off his 10 overs, two of which were maidens.

The Downham innings started badly with Alex Stewart being dismissed by Nudd off the fourth ball of the innings.

Alex Vincent and Ian Harrison however put on 51 for the second wicket to swing the game back into Downham' favour, before Vincent was out for 21. With Harrison at the crease Downham, who had secured the Alliance title the previous day by beating Lowestoft, looked comfortable but they did lose three further wickets before reaching their target of 146.

Harrison was finally run out by Benn Stone for 60 with the score at 140, leaving Corbett (26 not out) and Gould (2 not out) to score the last six runs needed for victory.

For Brooke Jonathan Wills took 2 for 29 off eight overs.

Ward's 5 for 18 deservedly won him the man of the match award, a brand new cricket bat presented by the NACO Chairman, John Tythcott.

Downham join Anglians as the two winners of the 2014 NACO Cup and Shield competitions.
