Fresh holiday breezes are a guarantee of action for Horning’s sailors

It was windiest during the morning, providing exciting racing, although it dropped during the afternoon series. The day included a protest and a man overboard.

The largest fleet was the Yeomans, with eight competing, and saw close racing, although it was eventually George Whitefoot and Kevin Edwards who took the wins.

In the YBOD fleet, Mark Harris, sailing Blue Wings, battled it out with Alastair Fields, sailing Rosy Wave, each taking a win during the day. Emerging at the front of the eight-strong mixed dinghy fleet was Flip Foulds, sailing a Laser Radial, with two wins, Ellie Edwards taking the third race sailing her Splash.

Easter Monday's traditional downriver race to Thurne attracted 15 entrants, sailing in a moderate north westerly breeze. The competitors included five river cruisers, with first cruiser on both legs being Peter Goshawk's Swallow, although on handicap he was beaten by George Brewis, sailing Amantani on the way downriver.

Both Clive Gardner and Jeremy Tusting took a win in the YBOD fleet, whilst Kevin Edwards, sailing Avocet, was first Yeoman both ways. Racing was particularly close amongst the dinghies, with three Lasers and a Wayfarer participating, less than a minute separating all the finishers on the downward leg, but Mark Tassie, sailing his Wayfarer, winning both ways on handicap.

A nationwide campaign to give allcomers a chance to try their hand on the water returns at the end of May.

The RYA Push the Boat Out will be held from May 13-21.

Among over 370 clubs and centres taking part across the UK are 12 from Norfolk: Blakeney SC, Coldham Hall SC, Hickling Broad SC, Hickling Windsurfing Club, Horning SC, Hunstanton SC, Norfolk Broads School of Sailing, Norfolk Broads Yacht Club, Norfolk Punt Club, Ouse Amateur SC, Snettisham Beach SC, Whitlingham Outdoor Education Centre.
