Former King’s Lynn Stars rider Piotr Protasiewicz is heading back to the Norfolk Arena for what he believes could become a regular fixture on the European speedway calendar.
The experienced Polish international is captain of Zielona Gora, who are making the trip to the UK on March 19 to take on a King’s Lynn Stars Select team – featuring Niels-Kristian Iversen, Kenneth Bjerre, Rory Schlein and current world champion and special guest Tai Woffinden – in the International Pre-Season Cup.
It is a prestigious affair given the quality of riders on display – and Protasiewicz believes it could be the first of many.
“I think there will be more of these types of meetings,” said Protasiewicz, who rode for the Stars in 1998.
“If it works, is well promoted in media, and fans like the idea of the competition, it might take place again next year. It could become an annual tradition.”
Both teams have strong line-ups – the visitors feature world number two Jaroslaw Hampel, fellow GP rider Andreas Jonsson and current world U21 champion Patryk Dudek – and Protasiewicz is relishing the battle at a track he knows well.
“It is one of the best tracks in England,” he said. “Being a part of this competition in King’s Lynn means being back at my old club. It is quite a challenging track and the conditions are sometimes difficult to race. The shape however is nice and if the track is well prepared, it will be a good meeting.
“Each team on its own track is much stronger than when racing away. The King’s Lynn boys know how to race, they will probably be after a few workouts so here is their chance. With Iversen and Woffinden in their team, they are world-class.”
Both teams will feature in an open practise session at the Norfolk Arena on the day before the meeting. Gates will open at 5pm, riders from both sides will be available for autographs, pictures and programme signings before they take to the track.
