The Queen’s Sandringham Estate echoed with cheers when the Olympic flame passed through on its winding journey through West Norfolk.

Thousands of people including dozens of excited school children gathered to watch as the torch travelled through the Norwich Gates towards the house, a private home to the Royal family for 150 years.

Paul Tudor, 58, from Spalding, Lincolnshire, was selected as a torchbearer for his dedication to squash at club, county and in recent years at international level for Wales over-55s.

On the steps in front of Sandringham House the flame was passed to Rachel Forrest, who carried her torch back out of the estate.

The 26-year-old, from King’s Lynn, is a dedicated rugby player and the only female referee in the Norfolk and Eastern Counties.

She said: “I’m so proud. I can’t think of anywhere better to do it. There are so many people I know and children I have coached here. The noise is amazing, it’s such a wonderful atmosphere.”

The torch then made its way to East and West Rudham.
