Ben Beynon, of Team Pedal Revolution, swept around the CC Breckland New Year’s Day 10 to win in the unseasonably fast time of 20:12.
Conditions on the Besthorpe–Browick and back course were certainly mild for the time of year, and the wind was moderate, but nevertheless this is a remarkable time for January.
Cindy Berry, now riding for Pedal Power Ipswich, repeated her 2017 women’s win – knocking over four minutes off her time a year ago – when the slower single-carriageway course on the historic A11 was used.
Second fastest time overall came from visitor Luke Dankert (Beds Roads CC) who finished in 20:27.
Representing organisers CC Breckland as first rider off, Tom Carroll was the first rider to reach the turn.
Fortunately this was just after CCB racing secretary Martin Badham had completed the marshalling team, having been delayed extracting his tricycle from a flood at Costessey.
Horsford MTB international Sophie Wright quietly appeared at the Trinity cyclo-cross in Ipswich. Choosing to race against the Senior Men, she took 10th place out of 60, covering each lap about one minute faster than the winner of the earlier Women’s race.
Kieran Jarvis (Team OnForm) finished fifth, but still heads the Senior League.
However, Steve James (Renvale) convincingly rode away from the field to win at Trinity and now just needs one more high placing from the remaining two rounds to clinch the League win.
Connor Rumbles, from Fakenham, took third step on the Junior podium after a race in which Cam Hurst (XRT/Elmy Cycles, first Junior) made certain of the League Junior Championship.
The local reliability trial season opens this Sunday with the classic East Anglian Cycling Club event.
Groups will leave Horsford Village Hall (NR10 3DN) between 8.30am and 9.30am.
Further details of the weekend’s event are available on the EACC’s website.
The following Sunday (January 14) there are similar start times for the VC Baracchi 50 mile trial which starts at Oulton Community Centre, Meadow Road, Lowestoft (NR32 3AZ).
Also this Sunday, cyclo-cross returns to Trinity Park Ipswich for National Trophy racing – the first race gets off at 10.15am, with the last one starting at 2.45pm.
