Eaton Golf Club's Trevor Cave is celebrating – not for the first time this season – after winning the county handicap championship.

Cave's burgeoning trophy cabinet already includes the East Anglian Men's Open Spring Foursomes trophy he won at Hunstanton while he also won the Searles PGA East Region Spring Classic, with Royal Norwich professional Neil Lythgoe, and finished third in the county foursomes.

The eight-handicapper shot a level par nett round of 71 in the morning at Swaffham and then a 72 in the afternoon for a winning cumulative score of 143, just one shot ahead of runner-up Daniel Young from Middleton Hall who beat Eaton's Neil Harrison on countback.

'It was a very windy day and very hard scoring for everyone,' said Cave. 'I was particularly pleased with my round in the afternoon because it was in quite difficult conditions and I dropped my last shot on the 13th.

'I was at the back of the field and I just knew that I had to be steady and I parred the last five holes. The 18th hole was an absolute killer and I'd imagine that the average score on that hole was a five.'

Cave added: 'I've had a good year. This was the only one left that I could go for and I won. I'm just enjoying my golf at the moment.

'I'm playing a couple of times a week and my handicap will have come down after this.'

It was certainly a good day for Eaton as members Harry Judd, Neil Harrison and Gary Wilson retained the team title for the club.

Harry Judd (8hcp) had nett rounds of 80 and 73, Neil Harrison (5hcp) carded 70 and 74 and Gary Wilson (8hcp) shot scores of 77 and 80.

Seventeen-year-old City of Norwich School pupil Judd, said: 'My first round was pretty disappointing and in the afternoon I had a pretty disappointing finish, but it was Neil who really carried us – he had two fantastic rounds.

'The conditions changed constantly, we had periods of heavy rain and sunshine.

'It was changing a lot and we had to be quite adaptable. None of us was paying much attention to the team score in the morning as we were all concentrating on ourselves, but after round two it was apparent that we were up there. Eaton have won it a few times and it's nice that we can keep it for another year.'
