Norwich United exited this season’s competition at the first hurdle losing by the odd goal in seven.

The Planters fell behind in the 10th minute when Kieran Bishop beat Andy Wilton to a long ball forward and had an easy tap-in.

Liam Jackson levelled eight minutes later with a first-time shot from Adam Hipperson’s pass.

Stanley Muguo hit a shot into the bottom corner to restore Grays’ lead and Bishop seized on Shaun Wones’ back pass to make it 3-1. A penalty for handball against Olumide Lapite was converted by Joao Carlos and the Planters had a mountain to climb at the break.

Hipperson’s sweetly-struck 75th-minute free-kick gave them hope and sub Adam Probert latched onto Henry Pollock’s delightful crossfield ball to chip the keeper in the last minute of normal time, for his first goal in senior football.

Grays Athletic: Johnson, Mahal, Cross, Fowler, Dunn, Muguo, Brown, Cole (Slabber 69), Bishop, Zuhdu (Poole 58), Carlos (Thompson 46). Subs not used: Stuart, Folkes.

Planters: Wilton, Pollock, Lapite (Henery 46), Crosby (Probert 68), Wones, Watts, Toke (Mackie 46), Datocampol, Hipperson, Jackson, Sanusi.
