Cricketers gathered on Friday night to celebrate a season of success in the Frankly Digital Norfolk Alliance.

The Alliance held their 2011 presentation evening at Wensum Valley Hotel and it was perhaps no surprise that runaway Premier Division winners Fakenham took centre stage.

As well as collecting their trophy for finishing 87 points clear at the top of the division, Fakenham scooped three other awards.

Experienced seamer Ian Slegg was the league’s leading wicket-taker with 57 victims, while first team wicketkeeper Stephen Gray had the most dismissals, taking 32 catches and five stumpings.

Meanwhile the club’s youngsters got in on the act by winning the Allan Bridgewater Under-13 Trophy.

Dereham’s first team were comfortable winners of Division Two, completing their third promotion in six years.

Hardingham, in their second year as an Alliance club, clinched the Division Four title.

Mattishall A were champions of Division Six, rounding off an excellent year for the club as the first team achieved their highest ever finish, fourth in Division One.

Swardeston-CEYMS’ strong youth set-up saw them win two junior competitions, while Topcroft were named club of the year based on marks given throughout the season by opposing captains.

Vauxhall Mallards’ former Kent and Derbyshire all-rounder Steve Goldsmith claimed the David Gooderham Batting Trophy after firing 869 runs for the Brundall club’s second team and Winterton marked their first year as an Alliance club by winning the Division Five title.

It was Alliance chairman Peter Thomas’ first year at the helm. He said: “It has been another excellent year of cricket with some outstanding performances and I congratulate all the award winners.

“Personally I think the decision at the start of the season to ban overseas players below the Premier Division has been a breath of fresh air and it’s good to see youngsters getting the chance to play.

“We are extremely grateful for the continued support of our sponsors, Frankly Digital, and look forward to another successful season in 2012.”
