The long wait is finally over for Costessey Park – they are once again the proud holders of the Bass Trophy.
It’s taken 13 years for them to win the county junior competition again, having won the inaugural championship back in 1999.
The Costessey Park team faced off against their Thetford counterparts around Barnham Broom’s Valley course having both topped their leagues and qualified through the semi-final stages. The final delivered a nerve-jangling climax to the competition with Costessey Park’s Samantha Darling holing the crucial put on the last hole to ensure her side won by three matches to two.
Costessey Park had raced into an early lead, winning the first two matches only to be pegged back to all square.
“It was an excellent team effort,” said Costessey Park junior organiser Garry Davis. “We won the first two matches quite convincingly 6&5 and 4&3 and then we lost the next two to level it up and then Samantha Darling in the last match was three down with five to play.
“She was up against it but managed to battle back to win it on the last hole with the last putt. It was brilliant. Sam parred it while her opponent three-putted which meant we won and avoided the play-off.” He added: “We played against Royal Norwich in the semi-finals and that went to an extra play-off hole so I’m pleased we didn’t have to go through that again.
“I’m very proud of the team and it all bodes well for Costessey Park to have these good young juniors coming up through the ranks.”
Norman Blanch, Norfolk Junior Secretary, was pleased with the action he witnessed.
“The game was played in a very good competitive spirit, very good golf was seen by the many supporters who attended this final,” he said.
Costessey Park 3 Thetford 2: Dylan Green lost to Dan Traher 2&1, Aiden Tanner beat Jess Dixon 4&3, Charlotte Hatch lost to Josh Chamberlain 3&2, Jake Metcalf beat Dean Scott 6&5, Samantha Darling beat Abigail O’Riordan 1 up.
