England were sent packing in the bowls by lowly Norfolk Island – and Jamie Chestney struggled to find the words to explain his disappointment.

Eastern Daily Press:

In a dramatic triples clash on Saturday in the Gold Coast, Norfolk Island – with a population of less than 2,000 – had too much for Chestney, Robert Paxton and David Bolt.

The Pacific island held on for a dramatic 19-18 victory in the 19th end to move into the final four and leave England scratching their heads.

'There is not a lot to say at this point, we didn't play as well as we could have done and we lost unfortunately,' was all Norfolk-born Chestney could muster.

It had all started so well for the trio at the Broadbeach club with a 17-16 victory over Wales confirming their passage to the quarter-finals on Saturday morning.

But a horror eighth end in their last-eight clash with the minnows saw them trail 12-6.

And while they fought back valiantly it was too little too late – according to Bolt who is second to Chestney's lead with Paxton as skip.

'It was an amazing match for the spectator that swung both ways, we let them get ahead with one bad end which put us six behind midway through,' he said.

'But they just hung in and hung in while we were a little bit scratchy and got the ones they needed at the end.

'Rob was unlucky on the actual last end, if we had got inside the jack we had the game but that's the way it goes – that's bowls.'

And skip Paxton admitted they would need to put this behind them as soon as possible with the doubles and singles still to come.

'They played decent bowls throughout the game we just didn't put them under enough pressure,' he said.

'It is disappointing now but we have to get our heads on and get focused now for the next matches we have got over the next couple of days.'
