Norfolk professional Chase Davis teamed up with his dad Garry to finish second in the 19th renewal of the Searles PGA Spring Classic.

The Marriott Sprowston Manor ace and his eight-handicap partner notched up 81 points in the two-round regional curtain-raiser staged at King's Lynn and Hunstanton.

That left them six short of the winners, former European Tour star Rob Coles and amateur partner Grant Beglan.

Both pairings recorded 42 points in the opening day's Stableford greensomes at King's Lynn to share the halfway lead.

But Coles and Beglan surged clear on day two under a better ball format at Hunstanton. Coles started birdie-birdie and the lead kept building until the par-five ninth where the Davis duo threatened to make major gains.

Chase struck a tremendous six-iron shot from 212 yards to six feet to set up an eagle opportunity that he would convert. But Beglan stepped up to unleash a telling blow of his own, miraculously getting up and down from a dune for a birdie. Coles said: 'I was looking like making bogey so that was a big moment. Then I made eagle from eight feet on the 15th and we birdied 16 and 17 so that got us through.'

The Davis pair were not quite able to match that scoring blitz but were pleased to finish in second spot.

Chase, 30, said: 'We had a nice couple of days. My dad is off eight and he's quite steady. He always has been and he was just making it easier for me. He would put it down the middle, which meant I could then be more attacking.

'On the first day he holed a 40-foot putt on the 18th green, from front to back, to make us 42 points.

'We were steady. If I wasn't in the hole, my dad was. There were never any struggles, really.'

Simon Dainty (Stoke by Nayland) and Sam Kinnane finished third place after accumulating 40 points in both rounds.
