CEYMS B boost Grant Matthewson Norwich and District Table Tennis League survival chances

11:27 18 January 2012

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich and District League CEYMS B climbed away from the relegation area in Premier A, with a 6-4 win over Wensum D and a 5-5 draw against Wensum C.

In the match against Wensum D Chris Pickard took all his singles for CEYMS B plus the doubles with Trevor Bunn who also took two singles to give them victory. Wensum D might count themselves unlucky not to gain at least a draw losing all four of the five set games. In the battle of the Gothic A & B teams the A side sneaked home 6-4 thanks mainly to a comfortable maximum from Philip Logsdon. CEYMS C and Foxwood A had a very close match with Foxwood just getting home 6-4 thanks mainly to Andy Hawes with three singles plus the doubles with Kevin Roper who also took a brace of singles to ensure victory for the Foxwood team. Wensum B took all the points over CEYMS C with maximums for Neil Charles and Kit Lo, to keep the pressure on the A side at the top of the table.

The Premier B top-of-the-table clash between Electricity and Hellesdon ended all square with Jamie McIntosh once again showing his class for Electricity at this level with a fine maximum that were all won in straight sets. Wensum G won the relegation battle 8-2 against bottom side SFC A with Alex Harley in good form for the winners. With five games going the distance, SFC can count themselves unlucky not to have won a point on the night. Firstline Factors and Gothic C played out a draw with Firstline coming back from 3-5 down for Alan Walpole to beat Paul Pegg in five sets and take the deciding doubles 13-11 in the fifth. Taverham B and Telephones A also battled out a draw with all six players getting on the scoresheet. Telephones B turned in a good team performance when beating Taverham A 7-3 with all the home players winning a brace of singles.

In Division One Missionaries’ captain Mary Sawyer lamented that the team can’t all play well at the same time, as they lost to NCC A 9-1. Newton Flotman went 4-2 up against Foxwood E who came back strongly in the second half to gain a 6-4 result. The highlight was the 5-set battle of the number ones Kieran Brady and Julie Andrew, who just got the win for Foxwood to seal the match.
