Linnets boss Gary Setchell pulled off his biggest transfer coup yet by getting former Norwich City midfielder David Bell to sign for his non-league outfit yesterday. And after the 30-year-old cancelled his contract by mutual consent at League One Notts County, Setchell admits he was stunned to land the former professional.

Lynn’s manager, whose side host Ilkeston today, said: “It’s a monstrous signing. We’re in a very, very fortunate position where I know the lad from my time at Rushden, when he was seen as one of the special youngsters. We’ve stayed in touch since.

“He said a few weeks back he was seriously considering playing part-time because his body can’t take the demands of full-time football anymore. He’ll have been inundated with offers from League One, Two, Conference and Conference North/South clubs. But it’s not about the money for him, it’s about enjoying the football. He’s here on ‘mate’s rates’. It’s an unbelievable coup for us.”

The Kettering-born player made his name with Rushden and Luton Town before the Canaries paid £600,000 for his services in July 2008. He appeared 20 times before Coventry City reportedly dished out £500,000 to sign him in January 2009. He stayed there until he joined County on a free last summer.
