Norwich City: David Wagner on Sam McCallum contract

Canaries head coach David Wagner has said that he wants to continue working with the left-back, whose contract is up this summer, after an impressive season so far.

Wagner feels McCallum has made significant progress amid a growing role in City's push for promotion, but says now isn't the time to be consumed by negotiations.

"This is someone I would love to see further here at the football club," Wagner said of McCallum. "We have to see about his thoughts, but the truth is that at the moment there are more important things than contract situations.

"But everything he's shown so far is enough to convince me that he is a player I'd like to work with.

"He is for sure one of the most improved players in the last four or five months, developing from a defence-minded full-back to an attack-minded full-back. He really attacks the red zone and is front-footed.

"He defends much more offensively, he is great in the air and has a long throw. He is a super pro, one of the best kids we have in the dressing room, there was never a shadow of a doubt of this.

"He still has a lot of space to improve. Obviously there were some less good performances as well, but in general you have to say that he's performed on a very high level."

Wagner also revealed that McCallum was keen to leave Norwich last summer, with clubs including Swansea City touted with an interest in his services and first-choice Dimitris Giannoulis ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 23-year-old was convinced to stay at Carrow Road, however, and his boss feels all parties have benefited from the decision.

"I'm very, very happy that I avoided him leaving last summer," Wagner continued. "He wanted to move on, which I totally respected and understood, but I had honest conversations with him.

"I said to him: 'There is something on the horizon for you. I don't know when or how much, but give us another year together and we will see how far we can push you.'

"I think he's made big steps in recent months."
