King’s Lynn Town 1 Tamworth 1

Owen Devonport earned King’s Lynn Town a valuable point with a dramatic equaliser at The Walks.

Lynn looked to be heading for a unlucky defeat against the runaway National League North leaders, before Devonport struck, turning well on the left of the area and firing left footed through a crowded area, with a deflection on the way.

Lynn are now 10 games unbeaten, a remarkable run which has moved them slowly but surely away from the drop zone.

And they were more than worth the point against Tamworth, who went ahead early in the second half with a deflected shot of their own.

There was one change to the Lynn side that won at Bishop’s Stortford in midweek, with Ben Stephens starting and Tommy Hughes returning to the bench.

Jonny Margetts had claims for a penalty turned down when he was caught by Luke Fairlamb, but it was a first half of few chances.

In-form Margetts had a sniff in the opening stages when he latched on to a hooked ball by Cameron Hargreaves but found himself outnumbered.

Good work by Hargreaves teed up Stephens for a shot into the far corner which was blocked as Lynn applied their first real bit of pressure 15 minutes in.

Daniel Creaney had the best of the early sighters, volleying wide from 10 yards after Chris Wren’s knock-down.

Davenport spun on a sixpence after good work by Hargreaves but saw his shot slide by the far post.

Margetts and Stephens couldn’t make the most of a good break from keeper Paul Jones’s long punt. Wren got a header on target but it was easy for Jones.

The killer blow came within a minute of the second half, as Kyle Finn found it too easy to get to the edge of the area before firing in a shot which clipped Coulson on the way past a stranded Jones.

Coulson almost made amends with a header back across goal that Creaney did really well to head away from under his own crossbar.

Tamworth, not surprisingly, tried to upset any rhythm the game had - lots of finger pointing and arguments were the order of the day – but it was down to Lynn to avoid being rattled.

Ross Barrows worked his way into a shooting position but fired straight at the keeper, as Lynn tried desperately to get back on level terms.

Lynn were on the ascendancy as the game entered its final 10 minutes - and got their rewards when Devonport struck.
